Show THE BETRAYAL IN THE GARDEN "When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with His disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples." (John 18: 1-2) When Jesus ate the Passover for the last time and instituted the Last Supper in that prepared upper room, He identified Judas as the one who would betray Him. He told Judas, "That thy doest, do quickly." (John 13: 17) The Bible says that from that moment Judas sought how he might betray him. Luke wrote, ''Then entered Satan into Judas 1 surn amed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chie fpriests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of he multitude. " (Luke 3-6) Judas was given money and a band of men and officers by the chief priest and the Pharisees. They came to the place where Jesus was with His disciples carrying lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus asked them who are looking for although He already knew because He knew everything. "Whom seek ye?" They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth. " Jesus said, You are looking 2 at Him. You have found Him. "/ am He. " The armed hunters got scared and backed away and fell to the ground. They were not so scared that they couldn't talk so when Jesus asked them a second time, "Whom seek ye? " ... they said, Jesus ofNazareth." Getting frustrated and wanting to protect His disciples, Jesus said, "/ have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these Jo their way. " Jesus told the chief priest, the elders, and the temple captains, that it didn't take all of that. In fact, He reminded them that He has been in the temple among them day after day and they could have laid hand on Him anytime. (Luke 22: 47-53) The Bible says that when Peter saw what was happening, he got hot and drew 3 his sword and cut of the right ear of the high priest's servant Malchus. Peter was ready and willing to fight but Jesus put him in his place saying, "Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drinkit? "(John 18: ll)Jesu shad already settle this issue in the Garden of Gethsemane. When He went there with Peter, James, and John and was transfigured. He asked His Father to move that bitter cup, but came to Himself and declared, "Nevertheless, not my will but thine be done. " Oh what a sad day it was! Judas betrayed Jesus in a garden, sold Him for 30 pieces of silver, realized Jesus was doomed, and then was remorseful. He tried to give the money back but they 4 wouldn't take it. So he threw it down. The chief priests picked it up but because it was blood money could not put it in the treasury. So they bought Potter's field with it, a place to bury strangers and the homeless. That place is called the field of blood until today. (Matthew 27: 10) Three things I want you to remember: 1. You cannot sell or buy Jesus for money. 2. Blood money ought not be put in the collection. 3, When God sends remorse, use it as you opportunity to repent and be forgiven. 5 |
