The Schmierer House is a one-story bungalow-style brick residence built in 1910 and located at 212 S. 900 East in Salt Lake City. The house is built in the bungalow style with some Arts & Crafts details. The house has a rectangular footprint measuring 26 by 48 feet with the narrow end facing the street. The main roof is hipped with simple gables over the extending over a full-width porch and the side bay. The roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The house is built on a rock-faced random ashlar foundation of red sandstone. The pressed brick is laid in a running bond with raked mortar joints. There are squarebutt shingles in the gable trim and covering a frame box bay on the north elevation. With the exception of the top half of the chimney on the north elevation, all the stone, brick and shingle work is painted light blue. The wood work is painted white. The house features exposed rafters (main/porch roof) and purlins (porch roof). The porch roof is supported on full-height brick piers with a square-post balustrade between. The house has the original wood steps flanked by stepped rail walls of brick and concrete (possibly later than the original construction, but appears in the 1936 tax photograph). The gable trim features a multi-light horizontal window with stylized cornice. There is a row of dentils under the shingles in the gable. The only major alteration to the exterior has been a basement entrance under the south half of the porch (circa 1937). The stairs lead to the south and are not visible unless viewing the house from the southeast. Minor alterations include two trellises attached to the porch, and a basement entrance in the rear (circa 1930s). The windows are mostly twelve-over-one doublehung windows in wood sash (found single or in pairs). There are a few smaller fixed frame windows and basement windows on the secondary elevations. On the interior, the house has 1,211 square feet of space on the main floor and in the basement. The interior has been remodeled to accommodate the basement apartment (circa 1930s). The house sits on a very small 0.06 parcel. The house has a shallow front yard of lawn with flowering shrubs near the porch. There is an asphalt driveway along the north side of the house with parking in the rear. The rear fence is covered with foliage. The Schmierer House is in the northeast quadrant of the Bryant Neighborhood and is surrounded by a residential mix of styles and types, mostly built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood also includes a few neighborhood-scale commercial and office buildings, two neighborhood churches, and the Holy Cross Hospital complex. 1 The building was evaluated as eligible/ contributing when the Bryant Neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as part of a boundary increase for the Central City Historic District in 2001. The historic district was expanded a second time in 2002 and the buildings are currently part of the NRHP Salt Lake City East Side Historic District. The Schmierer House was built within the historic period of the current NRHP district, defined as 1870 to 1946 in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. The Schmierer House is in good historic condition and continues to make a contribution to the architectural and historical significance of the Bryant Neighborhood. 1 The two churches are the LDS Church 11th Ward Meetinghouse (951 E. 100 South) and the St. Paul' s Episcopal Church (216 S. 900 East). Plat B was surveyed in 1848 as an eastern expansion of the city' s first survey, Plat A, which was platted in August 1847 soon after the arrival of Mormon settlers? Plat B had the same characteristics of the first plat: ten-acre blocks, each containing eight lots of 1If.. acres. Streets were 132 feet wide. Originally each lot was allowed the construction of one house with a standard setback of 20 feet. The rear of the property was to be used for vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and outbuildings for subsistence livestock and poultry? The settlers were organized into wards, with the north part of the Bryant Neighborhood part of the Eleventh Ward. 4 Because of the rapid growth of Salt Lake City in the late nineteenth century, the semi-rural lots were subdivided and the neighborhood became more urban in character. The modest homes of the first settlers were surrounded by the more substantial homes of the emerging middle-class. Multi-family housing for the working-class began to appear in the early 1900s. The neighborhood was easily accessible to the downtown and the University by a streetcar line along South Temple. By the midtwentieth century, the possibility for residential infill was limited. Later housing, apartment blocks, and office buildings often replaced older housing stock in decline. The significance of the Schmierer House falls within the contextual period Mature Community, 1900-1925 as described in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination.5 The east quarter of Lot 6 was originally owned by the families of Thomas and Pauline Jones between 1872 and 1887, and Ephraim and Elizabeth Jones until 1889. S. L. and Maud Boggs bought the property in 1889 and later sold the property to John G. and Louise Schmierer, who built a bungalow at 212 S. 900 East in 1910. John G. Schmierer, a merchant and bartender, died in September 1910, and after settling his estate, Louise Catharine Schmierer took out a mortgage for $3,800, enough to build the apartment block nearby at 874 E. 200 South. Louise Schmierer (1855-1929) was born in Ohio, the daughter of German immigrants. She came to Utah with her husband around 1890. They had three children, one son and two daughters. On the 1920 census Louise is living with her grown daughter Claudia [Katherine S.] Paddock. Louise Schmierer appears to have lived in the house at 212 S. 900 East until 1921 and then in the apartment block until her death in 1929. The house was sold to Emma Deckelman in 1921, who shared the title with Alice Anderson. The house was a rental during this period occupied mostly by Clara Alberta Huber Worthen (1872-1930) and her husband Manly Horatio Worthen (1867-1935), a masonry contractor. Emma Deckelman and Alice Anderson sold the property to Clara Worthen in 1927. Their son, Grant Huber Worthen (1909-1951), was listed there on the 1930 census, but the family had moved away by 1935.6 The Union Equity & Mortgage Company held the title until 1936 when it sold to Hinde Appelman, who sold the house to E. In 1937, E. B. Harrison obtained a building permit to remodel the house. The basement apartment appears to have been added at this time. The Harrisons also purchased the apartment block formerly owned by Louise Schmierer and built the service station at the comer (202 S. 900 East) in 1938. The Harrisons sold the property to Donald and Hilda Hanlon in 1944, who sold it to Joseph P. and Minnie S. Hinck in 1946. A year later the Hincks sold to Lionel and Edith P. Warsden who were long-time owners.
