Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The subject property, the Luther and Charlotte Burnham house, faces east and is located on a large property. It faces Redwood Road and is historically associated with three parcels of land (06-082-0090, 06-082-0091 and 06-081-0009) for a combined acreage of 272.30 acres. Over time, the parcels have split off and been divided by roads and highways, most recently the Legacy Highway, but legal descriptions found in abstracting the title indicate that early on the land associated with the Burnham house extended from Redwood Road to the Jordan River. At this writing, the land remains an expansive open space, flanked by residential subdivisions to the north and south and by low-density industrial subdivisions to the east. As stated above, the Legacy Highway has divided the land. The Burnham property consists of the primary residence, a brick block with a frame addition to the south; a gable-fronted adobe structure immediately southwest of the primary residence, and a one-car, frame garage immediately northwest of the house. Since UDOT acquired the property, the buildings have been vacant and are open to the elements. The house is Victorian Eclectic in style. Two construction phases are evident: the earlier, more ornate brick structure and a frame addition to the south, evidently built at a later period. Small frame appendages are also seen on the rear of the brick part ofthe house. The hipped roof of the brick building is carried throughout this portion, and the projecting bays also have hipped roofs. The brick part of the house is more imposing than that ofthe frame portion, as the roof is several feet higher, the trim around the openings is more elaborate and the fascia is wider with greater detail. The frame block of the house is side-gabled in massing, with a shed roof covering the interior rooms on the west and the south. The east (street elevation) and the south elevation are clad with wood siding in a novelty profile. Vinyl siding covers the southern half of the brick addition and the shed frame addition on the west elevation ofthe house. Entrances to the house consist of the original entrance on the brick house in the southern wall of the projecting bay, a single door on the east elevation of the frame addition, and through one of the frame, shed roof appendages on the west elevation of the original block. Only two windows of the brick house are discernible from the exterior: these are two eight-light windows on the east elevation. One-over-over, double hung windows are located on the northern half of the east elevation and on the north elevation, but their pattern can only be seen from the interior, as foliage has completely overtaken the north and much of the east elevations of the original house. A large, wood frame window is located south of the entrance to the frame portion of the house; the light configuration consists of eight, horizontally-oriented panes of glass. The south elevation ofthe house has a one-over-one, double-hung wood frame window. Fenestration on the rear of the house consists ofa mixture of nonhistoric windows with a vertical orientation. About 30 feet from the southwest comer of the primary residence is a one-story, adobe building. Because the building is in such poor condition, the adobe bricks are readily apparent; however, most of the stucco cladding remains. The building appears to be one or two rooms. It faces north. A single, wood, four-panel door and a one-light opening is located on the north elevation. Another entrance, with no door, is located on the south elevation; two window openings can be seen on the east elevation. The roof of the building is sheathed with corrugated metal and has no overhang. The garage is a single car, frame building with a gable front and a shed-roof appendage on the north. Access to the shedroofpart of the garage is through double doors that swing out. The garage is clad with a variety of materials, including clapboard, wood planking and synthetic brick siding. The garage is located about 20 feet from the northwest comer of the house. A photograph taken in the late 1990s on file at the Utah State Historic Preservation Office shows a neatly kept house, with a wide front lawn and mature trees. While the mature trees remain, all three buildings are on their way to complete obscuring by overgrown grass, "volunteer" trees and ivy. irs )II.ST()RY Architect/Builder: Unknown Date of Construction: c. 1881 Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with "s" or "c" (S = significant, C = contributing). Little information came to light regarding the history of this property and the lives of previous owners. The earliest owner of the property, Luther Sylvester Burnham, was born on September 13, 1816 in Brookfield, Vermont, and emigrated to Utah in 1854. 1 He married Charlotte Joslin in Aurora, Illinois on January 26, 1838. He and Charlotte had 13 children; 7 of whom lived to adulthood. Charlotte was also a native of Vermont; she died on April 15, 1909, at the age of87. Title records indicate that Luther bequeathed 10 acres of his land to Charlotte, "with all that appertains to said homestead for her and benefit;" and left the rest of the land to his daughter, Harriett Elnora Ellis, and her husband Joseph Ezra Ellis. 2 Joseph and Elnora, as she is referred to in the decree associated with the title, married in 1874 when Elnora was 18 and had 9 children. They owned the house until February 18, 1919, when they sold it to James Farnworth. James was born on January 14, 1864 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah and married Alice Thalmann, a native of Thurgau, Switzerland, in 1889. James died on May 21, 1939, while Alice lived on until her death on September 5,1953. They had 3 children. In 1935, the Farnworths sold their land to Swen C. and Helen Jensen, presumably on contract as the warranty deed was not recorded until 1950. A few months before James' death, in February, 1939, it appears the Jensens had to renege on their contract with the Farnworths, as the Farnworths lost part of the land to Davis County for failing to pay property taxes. A few months later, Davis County sold the land to J. Roy Free, a Sugar House businessman who founded several businesses in Sugar House, including Hygeia Ice. 3 On August 3, 1950, Alice Farnworth regained her former property from Mr. Free. The Jensens must have paid off their contract on the property, as they sold the land that year to Mills Brothers Company. The Mills Brothers, in various iterations, owned the land until UDOT acquired it in 2001. 1 2 3 Obituary for Luther Burnham, Deseret Evening News, May I, 1890, p. 3.
