Briefly describe the principal building. additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. SHED This is a single-cell prefabricated metal shed. The shed is a single story structure resting on a concrete foundation. There are four rectangular, wood-lined ventilation openings in the foundation. Each is 4 by 8 inches, with two each on the east and west sides of the foundation. The roof of the shed is covered with sheet metal and is moderately pitched with gable ends on both sides. A ridge cap, lined with screen mesh to allow ventilation of the attic space, covers the ridge of the roof. Entry to the structure is from the east side through a metal door with slide bar locking mechanism and solid batten lumber interior lining. The walls are constructed of metal sheeting that has been bolted together and appears to be in good condition. The metal sheets were apparently tin plated and covered with several layers of gray paint. The interior wall covering consists of wooden shiplap siding over 2 x 4" lumber framing. The walls are also filled with coarse gray sand, some of which has seeped out onto the floor. The floor is covered with tongue-and-groove flooring. ASSOCIATED STRUCTURES AND OUTBUILDINGS Associated structures include five additional storage sheds and a small wooden shed that is directly associated with Building #4. These associated structures will be described individually on separate Historic Site Forms. 5. Explain andjustify any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The structure was apparently used to store explosives by the Columbia and/or Illinois Powder Companies, which owned the property in the ~ly-mid twentieth century. A 1908 photograph (Shipler Negative Collection no. 8184, on file USHS library), shows at least eight buildings in the vicinity, with a rail spur running out to them. General Land Office maps made in 1855 and 1872 show no improvements on the property. This structure does not appear on the 1951 version of the Salt Lake City North 7.5 minute USGS quadrangle, although other buildings along 1100 West that appear to predate 1950 also do not appear; it may be that the small sheds in this area were simply not mapped at the time. This structure does appear on the 1961 version of the Salt Lake City North quadrangle. Detailed maps ofthe area from earlier in the twentieth century could not be located. Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps do not cover the area in question. Land own~ship and tax assessor records for the area are available at the Davis County Recorder's Office in Farmington. These records are incomplete, however. The earliest recorded transaction that covers the location of this structure occurred in 189, when the Union Pacific Railway deeded the land to Joseph G. Cutter. The next transactions occurred in November 1937, when there are two overlapping quit claim deeds for the area. One of these has Hyland Oil and Refining Co. as grantor, the second has Davis County as grantor. The grantee on both deeds is Perris S. Jensen. Then in December, 1937 there is a warranty deed with Perris Jensen as grantor and Strevell Paterson Hardware Co. as grantee. In 1939, a quit claim deed lists Strevell Paterson as grantor and Columbia Powder Company as grantee. In 1956 a warranty deed the location of this structure and two of the associated structres from Columbia Powder to Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation. In 1964, there is a quit claim deed for the location with Olin Mathieson as grantor and Commercial Solvents Corporation as grantee.
