SHED This is a single-cell brick shed. The shed is a single story structure resting on a concrete foundation that has two sequential additions on its west side. The additions are evident in the brickwork and in the foundation. Seventeen rectangular ventilation openings are present within the foundation below the interior floor level. There are eight on the eastern most section of the shed, three on the north and south sides and one on the east side. Each of these is brick lined and measures 2 Yz by 6 Yz". Those on the middle section of the shed include two on the north and south sides. These are metal lined with mesh coverings and measure 4 by 8". The openings on the western section include two on the north and south sides and one on the west side, each of which is covered with a metal grate and measures 5 by 8". The roof ofthe shed is covered with corrugated sheet metal and is moderately pitched with gabled ends on both sides. Entry to the structure is from the south side through two metal doors into the eastern and western sections ofthe structure. An additional doorway is present in the middle section, above which is a concrete lintel. This doorway, however, has subsequently been bricked in. The walls appear to be in good condition and are constructed of orange brick laid in an American bond with raked jointing. Ventilation of the attic space is provided by honeycomb brickwork leaving four small holes on each gabled end. A ventilation pipe is also present through the roof of the shed. ASSOCIATED STRUCTURES AND OlITBUILDINGS Associated structures include four additional storage sheds and a blast wall that is directly associated with Building #3. These associated structures are described individually on separate Historic Site Forms. 5. Explain andjustify any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The structure was apparently used to store explosives by the Giant and/or Atlas Powder Companies, which owned the property in the early-mid twentieth century. A 1908 photograph (Shipler Negative Collection no. 8184, on file USHS library), shows at least eight buildings in the vicinity, with a rail spur running out to them. Genenrl .~ 'Office maps made in 1855 and 1872 show no improvements on the property. This structure ;lppears on the 19SJ ~ersion of the Salt Lake City North 7.5 minute USGS quadrangle. Detailed maps of the area from ..earlier in the twentieth century could not be located. Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps do not cover the area in question . Land ownership and tax assessor records for the area are available at the Davis County Recorder's Office in Farmington. These records are incomplete, however. County records record a mortgage for the land granted by '1JP" to "UPRR", both grantor and grantee presumably representing incarnations of the Union Pacific Railroad. No other records are available for the property until 1934, when the Giant Powder Company deeded the land to the Atlas Powder Company. .
