The Ebenezer and Esther Miller House, built in c.1890, is a brick and wood-frame, Victorian-Eclectic, Cross Wing-type house on a stone foundation with a gable, asphalt shingle-covered roof. The house has undergone some alteration and received some additions, although it does not appear to have changed much since c.1936 when the first tax photo was taken of it. The yard appears much differently now, though, and several small, historic outbuildings are located behind the house. The cross wing plan of the house was one of the more common plans during the late 19th centuIy. Several homes in the area as well as throughout the state were constructed in this basic format which offered an alternative in floor plans for smaller homes. Little appears to have changed on the exterior of this particular house except for a couple of rear additions from the historic period. The 1936 appraisal card lists the exterior walls as " S. R brick," and the 1955 lists them as "painter S. R brick." So the heavy coating of paint, more than likely, did not exist during the historic period. The Victorian detailing is spare, being limited to the window openings which are segmentally-arched, and have one-over-one, double-hung, wooden sashes of various sizes. The window at the gable end of the cross wing is a square, fixed sash, with an arched transom. The original front porch appears to have been replaced in the c.1940s with concrete and has decorative metal posts supporting the porch roof. An asphalt shingle roof replaced the original wood shingles, and the original brick chimney was removed, probably at that time. At the rear of the house are some small additions of wood-frame and drop-siding construction. These all show on the 1898 Sanborn-Perris map. Behind the house is a long, narrow garage and three other small outbuildings. These appear to all be contributing structures and are all of wood-frame construction. The yard is narrow and deep with various types of plants and shrubs around the house and the perimeters. A large deciduous tree is located in front of the house in the grass strip between the street and sidewalk. Explain andjustify any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. Ebenezer (Eben) Miller was the first official owner of the property on which the house is located. He received a land certificate from Jesse W. Fox, the city surveyor, on June 6, 1867, for the entire lot. According to the tax file on the property the house was constructed c.1886, although no listing is made of Eben at this address in the Polk directories until 1890 where he is listed as a "carpenter." Eben married Esther Tryphosa Keys on March 9, 1867, in salt Lake City. Esther was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann Rushen Keys, and was born on May 21, 1847 in Danbury, Essex England. According to his obituary, Eben had held a considerable amount of property but had lost it through poor investments. He had several children and his wife, Esther, had to work to help provide for the family. Ebenezer passed away on February 2, 1894, and Esther lived several more years, passing away on April 25, 1929. Over the next few years the house went through several owners. Upon Eben 's death the property went to Paul Hammer, jr, who then immediately sold it to Charles Stevens. A few months later he sold it to a woman by the name of Lulu Smyth who sold it on May 25, 1896 to John G. and Nellie S. Gray. The only information obtained for the Grays was a listing in the Polk directories for 1898-99, where John is listed as a lawyer with "Booth, Lee, & Gray." No other information was found for either of them. John sold the house on April 8, 1899, to William V. and Elizabeth Besten. Besten, who is listed at this address in 1900, was a barber with "Besten & Lockington, Barbers." But that is all the information provided for him. William then sold the house to Harriet C. Gamick on March 19, 1901 . Harriet was the widow of George H. Gamick who passed away sometime before 1906. Harriet was born on April 6, 1861, in Swansea, England, the daughter of Samuel and Eliza D. Cook. She moved to Salt Lake City in c. 1899. She and George had two sons, Charles and George, whom were deeded the house in May 1935 . Charles lived in the house and worked at Arrow Press and Salt Lake Blue Printing Co. The current owners purchased the house from them on August 29, 1948. It is still a single-family residence and is fairly well-maintained. (--...
