The Shirley House is a one-story brick bungalow built in 1925. It is located at 963 E. 300 South in Salt Lake City. The building has a rectangular footprint measuring 27 by 46 feet with the narrow end facing the street (south elevation). The roof is hipped with a notched porch at the southeast comer. The raised foundation is concrete. The brick masonry is a purplish striated brick with raked mortar joints. At the porch, the roof is supported by a full-height brick pier. There is a brick rail wall with an aggregate concrete coping. The concrete steps face east. Aggregate concrete is also used as a sill for the tripartite front window and the window near the door. The windows on the secondary elevations have brick sills. The window and wood trim is painted light yellow. The front door is one-quarter glass with a multi-light security screen. The original wood soffits and fascia are intact. The roof is asphalt shingle. There is a brick chimneys tack on the west elevation. On the interior, the house has 1,151 square feet of space on the main floor and the same amount in the partially fmished basement. There are nine rooms total with four bedrooms and two baths. The house sits on a rectangular parcel of 0.12 acres. The front yard is lawn with a mature evergreen to the west. The sidewalk is along the east side of the house, as is the asphalt driveway. There are several mature trees along the west property line. The backyard is fenced with wood. The immediate neighborhood includes one-story brick and frame residences built primarily between 1891 and 1925. The area is in the northeast quadrant of the Bryant Neighborhood and is surrounded by a residential mix of styles and types, mostly built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood also includes a few neighborhood-scale commercial and office buildings, The Shirley House was evaluated as two neighborhood churches, and the Holy Cross Hospital complex. 1 eligible/contributing when the Bryant Neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as part of a boundary increase for the Central City Historic District in 2001. The historic district was expanded a second time in 2002 and the buildings are currently part of the NRHP Salt Lake City East Side Historic District. The house was built the historic period of the current NRHP district, defmed as 1870 to 1946 in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. There are some minor alterations but they do not impact the historic integrity of the house. The Shirley House is one of the last single-family infill houses built in the historic period. It is a typical example of a brick bungalow. The house is in good historic condition and contributes to the architectural and historical significance of the neighborhood. I The two churches are the LDS Church 11th Ward Meetinghouse (963 E. 100 South) and the St. Paul 's Episcopal Church (261 S. 900 East). The Holy Cross Hospital is currently known as the Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. Plat B was surveyed in 1848 as an eastern expansion of the city's fIrst survey, Plat A, which was platted in August 1847 soon after the arrival of Monnon settlers. 2 Plat B had the same characteristics as the fIrst plat: ten-acre blocks, each containing eight lots of 1Y4 acres. Streets were 132 feet wide. Originally each lot was allowed the construction of one house with a standard setback of20 feet. The rear of the property was to be used for vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and outbuildings for subsistence livestock and poultry.3 The settlers were organized into wards, with the north part of the Bryant Neighborhood part of the Eleventh Ward. Because of the rapid growth of Salt Lake City in the late nineteenth century, the semi-rural lots were subdivided and the neighborhood became more urban in character. Around the edges of the blocks, the modest homes of the fIrst settlers were joined by the more substantial homes of the emerging middle-class, particularly in the fIrst quarter of the twentieth century. Inner block streets such as Iowa Street were developed beginning in the 1890s. Multi-family housing for the working-class began to appear in the early 1900s. The neighborhood was easily accessible to the downtown and the University by a streetcar line along South Temple. The signifIcance of the Shirley House falls within the contextual periods Mature 4 Community, 1900-1925, and Depression and Decline, 1923-1946, as described in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. The Shirley House represents the development of bungalow infIll for Salt Lake's middle-class in the early part of the twentieth century. In 1889, John and Bettie Ingram purchased one-half of Lot I at the southeast corner of Block 43. They lived on the corner and the property to the west remained undeveloped. In 1909, the property was sold to Robert E. L. Collier and in April 1925 Robert and Estelle V. Collier sold the west parcel to Eugene E. and Karalina K. Shirley. A building pennit was issued in June 1925 and the house was probably completed later that year. Eugene and Karalina Shirley are listed at the address on the 1930 census with their three children. Eugene Edward Shirley (1882-1964) was a brakeman for the railroad. Karalina K. Shirley (1883-1973) was born in Gennany and came to the United States in 1901. 5 They had three children. Eugene and Karalina Shirley lived in the house the remainder of their lives. In 1973, the property was deeded to their heirs and then to Carl S. and Karen S. Myers in 1974. Between 1976 and 1986, the property had four owners before it was acquired by the current owners. 2 The first permanent settlers of Salt Lake City were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the LDS or Mormon Church.
