Use continuation sheets as necessary. The William and Ada Hawkes House, built in c.1887, 1 is a brick and stucco, Victorian-Eclectic, Cross Wing-type house on a stone foundation with a gable, asphalt shingle-covered roof. The house has undergone some alteration and received some additions, although it does not appear to have changed much since c.1936 when the first tax photo was taken of it. The yard appears much differently now, though, and a more-recent outbuilding has been constructed behind the house. The cross wing plan of the house was one of the more common plans during the late 19th century. Several homes in the area as well as throughout the state were constructed in this basic format which offered an alternative in floor plans for smaller homes. Little appears to have changed on the exterior of this particular house except for a couple of rear additions from the historic period. The 1936 appraisal card lists the exterior walls as "stucco on brick." Even though the walls of the house are brick, the brick is soft-fired, but it is possible that when the house was first built the walls were not stuccoed. The front of the house, which faces south, received a porch after the tum of the century. The early tax photo shows battered columns, one of which was removed and the current owner has replaced with a copy. Whether these replacements or the originals is not known. The square window on the front facade behind the porch has possibly either been shortened or the transom removed; a plain, square window was not common on houses from this period. Except for this window and the one on the gable end of the cross wing, all of the windows are one-over-one, double-hung, wooden sashes. Those on the sides are slightly arched at the top, typical of Victorian windows. It appears that two generations of additions have been constructed to the rear of the house. The first filled in the area created by the T -shape of the cross wing, the second extends across almost the entire rear of the house. Below this is a small cellar area with poured-concrete walls. The additions are of wood-frame and stucco construction and contain a kitchen and other spaces. The 1936 appraisal card lists a 1931 remodel, and whether that is referring to the additions is not known, but they appear to be from an earlier date. The tax photo shows a bare yard with no trees, although trees must have been planted shortly after the photo was taken, for there are two large deciduous trees in the front yard now. There are also several large examples of bushes and shrubs, as well as a variety of flowers and ivy taking up almost the entire yard, front and back. Along the east side of the house is a gravel driveway providing access to the garage behind and interior of the block. A garage was constructed behind the house in 1953, according to the appraisal cards, and is of wood-frame and siding construction with a gable roof. It is possible that this replaced an earlier building. The house is in fairly good shape and the current owner plans on restoring the interior soon. IThe date on the 1936 appraisal card lists 1885, but this date was apparently obtained from neighbors. The first date listed in the Polk directory for anyone residing at this address is 1887. William and Ada Hawkes purchased the property on which the house is constructed from their son-in-law, James Lawson, on September 9, 1886. Williams name first appears at this address in the 1887-88 Polk directory for Salt Lake City. Whether they lived in the house for very long is difficult to ascertain. The directories consulted after the turn of the centuIy list the address for William as 843 East, rather than 847 East, and then in 1917 he is listed at 156 Hawkes Court, where he remained until his death on September 2, 1919. William was born in Salt Lake City c.1857, and was a butcher for about thirty years. The directories list "Hawkes Brothers," "Miller & Lindsay," and "0. G. Hudson" as places where he was employed at various times; it is assumed that these were all meat markets. On May 29, 1877 he married Ada Blair who was born on October 4, 1870, in Salt Lake City to Edward Francis and Eleanor T. Fenwick Blair. The couple had three children before Ada passed away at an early age on April 26, 1909. The address provided in her obituary is 843 West [probably "East"] Third South. Upon William's death the house went to his son Thomas, who then sold it to his brother William V. on March 30, 1922. Apparently neither of them lived in it, and William V. sold it to Hans Peter Folkersen on April 8, 1926. Hans Folkersen was born on July 28, 1858, in Haldagergaarde, Fuglebjerg, Denmark, to Folker Christensen and Inger Hansen. In 1879 he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and after serving as a missionary in Denmark he immigrated to America in 1882, settling in Salt Lake City in December of that year. He married Anna Anderson (of whom no information was found) on April 5, 1883, and they had eight children. On February 6, 1885 (or March 6, 1886, two different dates are provided) he married Caroline G. Madsen. Caroline was born on June 16, 1863, in Hernig, Denmark, and carne to Salt Lake City in c.1886. This union provided seven children, making fifteen children total. Hans served another mission to Denmark from 1905-07. Upon returning he was quite involved in church service, serving in the finance committee for the construction of the 31 st Ward meetinghouse, presiding Teacher in that same ward, and president of the Scandinavian meetings in the Liberty Stake. According to his obituary he was a also building contractor. Hans passed away on September 20, 1937, and Caroline followed him in death on January 22, 1951. They owned the house only a few years, selling it on September 12, 1929 to Herman Schilperoot. Herman apparently did not live in the house the full time he owned it. Various Polk directories have him listed here, and then at other addresses. Herman was a native of Rotterdam, Holland, having immigrated to the United States in 1927. He was the son of Johanna and Neel~e Swamborn Schilperoot and was born on November 7, 1876. Before moving to Utah he worked in the credit department of a Hollan firm, and upon arriving in Salt Lake City, took a job as custodian of the relics in the information bureau; he is later listed as a painter in the city directories. On October 10, 1900, he married Helena Van Prooyen, and they had three children. Helena was born December 5, 1875, in North Brabant, Netherlands, to Wouter and Pieternella Du Cloo Van Prooyen. They were both active in the LDS Church. Herman was a counselor in the branch presidency and cared for the missionaries while still in Holland. He died on September 14, 1950, and Helena on August 28,1959. In 1934 the building was quit-claim-deeded to Zion ' s Benelit Building Soc., who then sold the it through special warranty deed to Glenn and Dora Lindsay on July 9, 1945 . Glenn was born on November 13, 1899, in Heber, Utah, to James W. and Christina Bauer Lindsay. He married Dom Nicol on July 15, 1919. Dora was the daughter of Gabriel Blake and Stella Jane Duke Nicol, having been born on March 24, 1902, in Heber. The couple had one child. Glenn was an employee of Utah Oil Relining Co. The Lindsay ' s lived in the house at least until Glenn ' s death on May 7, 1961 , and Dora probably stayed there much longer. The house remained in possession of their daughter and son-in-law until Dora ' s death on July 12, 1983, when the current owner purchased the house from the family. The house is still in use as a residence.
