HISTORIC SITE FORM (continuation sheet) 4. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION 572/574 North 400 West, Salt Lake City (SJ-393) Architectural Description The residence on this property, built in 1911, is a one-story hip roof Neoclassical double house type A. The house rests on a poured concrete foundation and is built of painted regular fired brick. The house measures 12-by-8.5-m (40-by-28-ft) in size (Salt Lake County Assessor [SLCA] 1936). Almost the entire front (west) wall of the building is covered by a hip roofporch cover over a raised wooden landing. The asphalt shingle covered roof is supported by two Neoclassical wooden Tuscan order columns and one wrought iron post which, presumably, replaced a Tuscan column there previously. Two five-step straight entries provide access to the front porch and to the two individual doors on the double house. The remains of a poorly constructed wooden balustrade is attached to the front of the porch landing. In the rear of the house is an enclosed shed roof addition. The hip roof of the house is covered with asphalt shingles and has wood strip soffits around the eaves of the house. There is one visible chimney on the house. On the north side is a tall corbeled fired brick eave chimney. There are also two small gable roof dormers on the north and south slopes near the crest of the roof. They are made of vertical plank siding and have two-light sliding windows in the gable ends. These dormers appear to be out-of-period additions to the house. Windows on the house include a mixture of fixed-sash, sliding and double-hung types. All window openings have concrete lug sills and those on the north and south walls have double brick segmental arch lintels with brick corbelling above the lintels. There are two single-pane, fixedsash windows on the front (east) wall of the house with boarded-over transoms. Both window openings have large straight concrete lintels. Both the west and east sides of the house have a pair of one-over-one double-hung windows and a single one-over-one double-hung window. They also have a two-light slider in place of a former transom window. The rear shed roof addition has a window opening on the north side only. The two front doors of the house are not visible. They are both boarded-over since the house is currently unoccupied and for sale. HISTORIC SITE FORM (continuation sheet) 5. HISTORY The dual residence at 572/574 North 400 West was built in 1911 (SLCA 1936). The builder of the house is unknown. However, at that time, the property was owned by George J. and Minnie Brown Evans (Salt Lake County Recorder [SLCR] 1910). The original patent for this property was issued to Robert Smith on July 3, 1882 (SLCR 1882).According to Salt Lake County property records, the property where the home now stands came into possession of the Evans family in April 1910 when Alma E. and Lucile Evans Brown deeded it to their brother-inlaw, George J. Evans (SLCR 1910). The property changed hands nine times prior to George J. and Minnie Brown Evanstaking possession. George John Evans was born in Rexburg, Idaho on May 8, 1885 a son of George Lloyd and Lucy Lee Evans. George J. Evans married Minnie Blanch Brown on September 21, 1917 (Family History Library n.d.). Minnie Blanch was born in Salt Lake City on January 2, 1883 the ninth child of Samuel James and Elizabeth Emma Solomon Brown (Family History Library n.d.). George Evans died on September 18, 1917 in Salt Lake City (Deseret News, 19 September 1917: 2). Minnie Blanch Brown died April 11, 1980 in Arlington, Virginia and was buried in Salt Lake City (Family History Library n.d.). No additional biographical data was found on the Evans family. In April 1913 George and Minnie Evans deeded the property to Alma E. and Lucile Evans Brown (SLCR 1913). In September 1915 the Browns deeded the property to Harriet B. Cannon (SLCR 1915). In 1916 Harriet B. Cannon deeded the property to A. A. Lundberg (SLCR 1916). A. A. Lundberg and his wife, Maggie, retained the property until April 1918 (SLCR 1918) when they deeded it to the Cardon Company. In March 1921 the Cardon Company deeded the property to George W. Lindquist (SLCR 1921). In April 1928 George W. Lindquist deeded the property to L.B. Cardon (SLCR 1928a). In October of that same year, L.B. and Eleanor H. Cardon deeded the property to Glen C. and Martha W. Young (SLCR 1928b). The Youngs retained the property until July 1953 when they deeded it to John and Grace V. Roghaar (SLCR 1953). The Roghaars retained the property until May 1961 when they deeded it to Gerald C. and Needra June Stromberg (SLCR 1961). The Strombergs retained the property until August 1974 (SLCR 1974) when it was deeded to the Mortgage Investment Trust (MIT) of Utah. MIT held title to the property until November 1983 when they deeded it to Stephen M. Harmsen (SLCR 1983a). During the same month Stephen M. Harmsen deeded the property to David Bradford Allen (SLCR 1983b). Later that month David Bradford deeded the property to Curtis L. Basta (SLCR 1983c). Curtis L. Basta held title to the property until March 1994 when he deeded it to the current owner, Jay W. Milton (SLCR 1994). mSTORIC SITE FORM (continuation sheet) REFERENCES CITED Deseret News [Salt Lake City, Utah] 1917 [Obituary for George J. Evans] 19 September:2, col. 7. Salt Lake City, Utah.
