Bioavailability of constatnt-T and theo-dur, two sustained-release theophylline products, in geriatric patients

Sustained-release theophylline products have improved drug therapy for many patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The use of these products can prolong the dosing interval, improve control of symptoms, 1 and increase patient compliance. Differences in the extent of absorption and fluctuation of serum concentrations have been characterized for various sustained-release theophylline formulations. As a result, the dose and dosing interval should be carefully re-evaluated when changing from the use of one formulation to another. The objectives of this study were to: 1.) Compare the bioavailability of Constant-T and Theo-Dur in geriatric patients with COPD; 2.) Compare the peak to trough differences in serum theophylline concentration from Constant-T and Theo-Dur in geriatric patients with COPD.
