Title In the house of beauty
Date 2010-12
Description This collection of short fiction was written to explore the limits of genre, the page, and language itself. It is an exploration and discovery of space. A peek into the in between. An examination of the unknown, the negative, the experiences that never were. It is a contradiction. A fleeting moment in time. A depiction of creation. Reined into four separate sections, this collection interweaves stories of the body and self, worship and betrayal, the domestic, and the undiscovered. Fiction becomes nonfiction becomes lyric becomes prose again. These stories seek to expose the nerves of language. Here words are seduction, negation, collision. The mouths that speak are those of gods and the dead, children and lovers, aviators and prophets. In the house of beauty language may dart across the page, slow into columns, or rest atop an image. This collection means to examine the material reality of a page: white space, alignments, order and categorization. Some pieces collage together found text;, illustrations, or photographs to re-examine how image and text; collide on a page. The last section contains video / text; pieces that exist outside the space of the page. These videos attempt to further explore the experience of reading. To confront and challenge the linear idea of time, to make the familiar strange. A piano key. A bare lightbulb. The blinking heart of the elevator light. The very appearance of words themselves. Knock and it will answer.
