The front gable has wood shingle siding, as does the gable on the front porch. The porch has tapered square wooden colurms. It has been screened in. Walls are os brick with two corbeled belt courses above the windows, which have brick segmental arches. -----Thomas W. Hanchett. The developer of this group of houses probably chose the designs from an architectural pattern book, a comron practice in the district. In 1903 Charles W. Midgley took out building penni ts to construct five brick cottages on this street. Houses numbered 252 to 270 J Street were built by Midgley at this tiIre. Cllarles Midgley was born in Nephi, Utah on Septenrer 23, 1864, and roved to Salt Lake City as a young b~y. He was one of the first theatre operators in Salt Lake, entering the business in 1906. In 1913 he operated the American Theatre Company in downtown Salt Lake. Midgley rroved to California in 1914 \\here he died in 1937. Apparently Charles Midgley did not live in this house. From 1904 to 1909 Walter Brynat, the vice-president of the A.W. Smith Real Estate company held the title to this house. In 1909 Walter Bryant sold this house to J. Herman Johnson, \\ho becane the first resident-owner. J. Herman Johnson was born July 18, 1878 in Salt Lake City, to A.J. and Oornielia Herman Johnson.. He was a graduate of the University of Utah , and received a degree as a civil engineer. He worked in that capacity for the union Pacific Railroad. He married Hazel Woodruff in SLC in 1907. He lived in this house until 1919 and sold it in 1924. J. Herman Johnson died in IDs Angeles in 1965. He was survived by his wife and three sons. In 1924 this house was purchased by William R. H. Paxrmn, the Paxrmn Family lived here from 1919 to at least 1940. William Pa).1Ilan was the son of William and Ann R. Paxman, born June 13, 1856 aboard the ship Horizon bound from England. He lived in Azrerican Fork, Utah and later St. George, . where he worked on the St. George lIXS Temple. Avenues H. Paxman, was the resident and owner from 1925 to 1937. She was born in Salt Lake City in 1859 a daughter of John Moody and Sarah Matilda Damron, She lj,a,s been the secretary of the St. George Relie~ Society and presdient of the Sorosis Club of Provo. She was also a rrember of ihe Daughters of the utah Pioneers Camp 21 and the Wasatch Literary Club. She died in Salt Lake City in 1937. Her daughter, Sarah Matilda Foster Hedquist Anderson owned the house until 1969. Clive Ho11ocombe Clift owned the house in 1970 and then sold it to Robert G. Schreiner. He sold the house to JanES David Wright in 1973.
