'!he front gable has \roOd shingle siding, as does the gable on the front JX>rch. Walls are of brick with a rough-faced bult xourse at the tops of the windows which have brick arched openings. The segnental front bay window has a center transom. '!he original wooden JX>rch colunns have been replaced with wrought iron ones .. The developer of this group of houses probably chose the designs from an architectural pattern book, a coonon practice in the district. In 1903 Cllarles W.i Midgley took out the building permits to construct five brick co cottages on this street. Houses ntlIliJered 252 through 270 J Street were built by Midgley . at this tine. Charles Midgley was born in Nephi, Utah on September 23, 1864 and lIDVed to Salt Lake City as a young boy. He was one of the first theatre operators in Salt Lake City, entering the business in 1906. In 1913 he operated the Anerican '!heatre Conpany in downtown Salt Lake. Midgley IIDved to California in 1914 \\here he died in 1937. Apparently Charles Midgley di,d not live in this house. In 1905 he granted a warantee deed to A.W. Smith and Cbmpany, a real estate and loan company. From 1905 to 1907 Walter Bryant, the vice-president of A.W. Smith and Cb. held the title to this house. In 1907 Bryant sold the house to Charles A. Johnson, and he becarre the frist ownerresident. Charles A. Johnson was born in Mariastad, Sweden on July 12, 1876. He carre to Salt Lake City at the age of four. He worked in the IIl3rchandise business as a clerk, manager and buyer for local nen I s clothing stores. He was employed by Auerbach and Canpany for a ntlIliJer of years . For the last eight years of his life he was a real estate salesman for the Toronto Realty Cbmpany. He was an active nenber of the rm Church and served as cotmselor to the bishopric I s of the 13th and 21st Wards. Mr. Johnson owned this house until 1923, and lived here fran 1907 to 1920. He died in SLC in 1932 and was survived by his wife, Minnie Lindsay Johnson, three sons and a daughter. Avenues H. D. 262 J St Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County 262 J Street In 1922 and 1923 Francis E. King, a driver for the Arrerican Railway Express lived here. From 1923 to 1928 Jesse R. Enlish, a resident at 426 9th Avenue, owned this house, During this period William W. Ihelps, an agent for M=tropoli tan Life (1925) I David W. Adamson, also an agent for M=tropoli tan Life, (1926) , and Olarles W, Parker I a salesman (1927) lived here . In 1928 the house was purchased by C, Edwin Carlson and it was vacant. The next year Carlson sold the house to D:lnnis W.
