This house apparently replaced a pre-1898 brick home. Mrs. Sarah Williams is listed by city directories at this address in 1899 and 1900. However, Minnie L. Watts (225 D Street) had bought the property for $1,900 in 1898 from Utah Title Insurance Corporation and continued to own the property until she lost it in 1900 in a sheriff's sale. The property was picked up by speculator Harrison Hull. By 1903 Lee Christopher was the resident here. Christopher was a contractor and in 1907, his wife Melissa A. Christopher became the title holder. In 1921, she sold it to Charles N. Ray. He was born in Bedford, Indiana, September 10, 1872, a son of Thomas T. and Susan E. K. Ray. He graduated from Louisville, Medical College in 1907, and settled in Bingham, Utah and became surgeon for the Utah Copper Company. After six years, he resigned, and set up private practice in Salt Lake City. According to a biographical sketch, he "was appointed county physician in 1916, serving in that capacity to the entire satisfaction of all concerned until the fortunes of politics and a democratic administration unseated him." He owned the house through the 1930's. Hopefully they can be of some use in your tile-cleaning effort. If they are unsuccessful, you may want to contact Division 7 Specialties, suppliers and product representatives for roofing, waterproofing, and masonry cleaning products. (732 North 400 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84103, phone: 355-4343 fax: 355-440n. I believe they supply Restoration Cleaner and could give a better opinion for its appropriateness and potential in cleaning tile. If it all checks out, keep trying small test patches in inconspicuous locations to test for minimum chemical concentrations, dwell time, etc. Since your house is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Avenues Historic District, we have also enclosed a fact sheet on the state historic preservation tax credit which provides for a credit equal to 20 percent of qualified rehabilitation expenditures against your state income tax. The state tax credit law requires that all proposed or on-going work must be approved by our office as meeting the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation before the project is completed. Also, a minimum of $10,000 must be spent on the rehabilitation over a maximum period of 36 months. There is no fee to apply for this tax credit. This application is separate from any review or application that may be required by a local preservation commission or other organizations (e.g., landmarks Commission or the Utah Heritage Foundation). We encourage you to apply for the preservation tax credit as soon as possible to verify if any on-going work meets the Secretary of the Interior's Stanc/ards for Rehabilitation. Once work is underway, changes to bring the project into conformance with the Standards can be difficult, expensive or occasionally impossible to make. Photographs showing all area of work prior to the beginning of construction are required as part of the application. Board of State History: Marilyn C. Barker· Dale L. Berae • Boyd A. Blaaner • Peter L. Oosa David D. HaRMn • Carol C. Madsen • Dean L. May • Christie Needham • Thomu E. Please let us know if you have any questions or if we can be of further assistance. Sincerely, Charles M. Shepherd, RA Historical Architect Office of Historic Preservation |
