Oak Creek Many intact nineteenth-century homesteads remain along the Milburn Road both north and south of Milburn. Among them is this small, one-and-one-half story brick dwelling and its frame outbuildings. Basically it is a vernacular structure, with ornamental brick trim in the window arches, lathe-turned porch columns and corbeled chimney. The central dormer not only adds architectural variety, it has a door to the porch balcony and windows that light up the attic rooms. The house appears to date from the 1890s. Sections of the old picket fence, precariously remain . John L. Mower was a farmer and cattleman who lived in Oak Creek. His son Eskel Mower and wife Viola acquired the house in 1940 and lived here for 23 years. Eskel was a farmer who raised cattle, dairy cows and hay. He had a huge garden and a big apple orchard on the north side. Eskel valued hard work and frugality, and didn't care for modernization. He always used a horse team and wagon for plOWing and mowing his hay; two workmen pitched the hay into his wagon, piling it into an enormous load. The hay completely filled their huge barn and Eskers daughter Bonnie still remembers its smell. Eskel didn't own a car until 1950. The Mowers raised three daughters in the home, with no running water or electricity. Water was hauled from a well and heated on the stove. Milk was kept cold only in the winter. Eskel and Viola moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1963 and the Bangerter family bought the home to use as a weekend getaway. ~eJ?~~ g~ #~ /.Y~~ t/fi g~ O'/~/eAZ ~c>~ ¥~.6-~ ct3~~ Creators and Editors Karen S.
