The roofs are covered with tile, which is not original. The heavy cornices and returns show influence of the Greek Revival Style, popular in the eastern u. S. in the first half of the 19th century. There appear to be north and rear additions, and the first story windows and porches are probably not original. --Thomas W. Political Recreation o Religion o Science o Socio-Humanitarian o Transportation This is one of the older homes in the area, and belonged to one of the more noted figures in Utah History, George Reynolds. (1842-1909) Reynolds had come to Utah from England as part of the Mormon "gathering." He was married to Amelia Jane Schofield, in 1874 which was the basis of the test case of the constitutionality of the "anti-bigamy" law of 1862. Reynolds was declared guilty, sentenced to one years imprisonment and forced to pay a fine of $500. His appeal to the U.S. S~preme Court in 1879 upheld the home court's ruling. (George married his third wife in 1885). At the time of his court case, George was secretary to LDS President Brigham Young. He continued to be prominent in the LDS Church. In 1894 he was one of the organizers of the Geneological Society of Utah. The family home of George's first wife MaryAnn Tuddenham was eventually 343 Wall Street. The homes of the two other wives Amelia Schofield and Mary Gould were 333 4th Ave. (replaced) and this house. After 1885 the family of the first wife lived at 118 Center (George is listed as living there). This home was occupied at various times by Reynolds family members. It is Amelia Schofield (1852-1908) who finally obtains ownership. She left it upon her death to her daughter Marion Groves Reynolds W. Golfenden. Various members of her family continued to live here including her daughter Susie Alberta Russell and (John H.) her family. Alberta acquired ownership of the home in 1917. The Russells lived here until 1927 when Alberta transferred the home to Murray and Hazel M. Rock who then transferred it to Peter Johnson who sold it in 1928 on contract to Alexander Herbert and Wilma Akerglom Vidlund, (1884-1952). Alexander was a carpenter.
