Show embracing community embracing community Architecture That CreatesCommunity Sara Staffanson 2009 Master's Project embracing community embracing community A community is made up by the character of the individuals who reside within it. Sara Staffanson 2009 Master's Project Masterplan Design 0 500' The city is overlaid by a rigid grid system that facilitates the easy movement of cars. This masterplan uses the path carved by the pedestrian to determine building shape. The path is a meandering one, as a pedestrian does not typically walk in a straight line. The paths lead to the Salt Lake's Intermodal Hub. Concept 0 500' Existing conditions with site highlighted in red. Proposed masterplan Proposed uses Residential Office Comm./Res. Mixed Commercial Office/Rex. Mixed Institutional/Hotel Community Design A mother embraces her child because she desires to protect him. However, her embrace is not tight as she understands the need for her child to explore the world around him. She remains an ever present source of support. This concept was the ordering principle for the building. The constancy of the mother is represented in the fixed appearance of the building while the exploratory nature of the child is expressed through the seemingly free movement of the boxes. Project Goals Concept The building should accommodate a variety of life stages in order to facilitate a lively and interesting community atmosphere. Spaces should be flexible and allow the residents to design their home according to their needs. Community spaces should also be flexible to adapt and reflect the community's values. Private community spaces should be present throughout the building and easily distinguishable by those not living in the building. Public community spaces should also be provided for in order to include others from the larger community. Sustainability must be part of any new building in this day and age. Systems should be simple so that they may be easily maintained by residents. Floorplans Mechanical Storage Storage Retail Retail/Office Community (Public) Restaurant/Cafe Lower Level First Level The differing unit sizes in this building allow for a variety of people to live here. From the college student, to the family, to the elderly, there are many possibilities not only for living but for interaction as well. Life Stages 0 10' 25' N Process 2C 1-2 Bed. Community (Private) Fourth Level Fifth Level Dwellings are designed to be flexible with a mobile kitchen and bathroom. The number of bedrooms a unit has depends on how the resident designs their own space. Flexibility Two angles were chosen for the "free" boxes. The first angle is based on the box on the north end of the building, which points down the pedestrian path of the masterplan. The other angle was determined on the 4th level by the interesting space it created. All boxes face south to take advantage of the sun. "Free" Box Design 0 10' 25' Movies 6C 3-4 Bed. Staircases in the central open space allow people to move and explore the building vertically. Landings were strategically placed to focus attention on the larger community as you reach the top of the stairs. 0 10' 25' Second Level Community Space Detailed Single-Story Floorplan (Unit 2C) Showing variety of placement options & resulting spaces Example of unit "plug-in" access Access panels with utility hook-ups. This allows for flexibility in the floorplan and for the tenant to explore their inner architect. The result was a building with several dwelling units of different sizes surrounded by outdoor community spaces throughout the building. There are many opportunities for interaction with neighbors and the community at large. embracing community embracing community |
