Description In the vast majority of cases, proptosis is caused by intraorbital or intracavernous lesions. In some cases, however, tumors located in the temporal fossa produce pressure on the veins of the cavernous sinus, resulting in proptosis from secondary intraorbital venous congestion. Chronically raised ICP can cause unilateral or bilateral proptosis, and chronic shunting of hydrocephalus may result in enophthalmos.
