Description The axons of the ganglion cells travel intracranially within the optic nerve, optic chiasm, and optic tract. Just before these axons reach the LGN, some of them (or some of their branches) leave the optic tract (primarily the gamma cell type) to reach the pretectal olivary nucleus in the mesencephalon via the brachium of the superior colliculus. As mentioned above, a small contribution of bifurcating fibers from the and alpha and beta ganglion cell axons also travel within the brachium.
