Infectious Diseases; Bacteria; Gram-Negative Cocci; Moraxella |
Description |
This genus includes a variety of bacteria commonly associated with ocular disease, particularly Moraxella lacunata. Also included in this genus is a species of bacteria once considered to be a species of Neisseria and called Neisseria catarrhalis but that differs from other species of Neisseria in both its base content of DNA and its composition of fatty acids. Accordingly, it was renamed Branhamella catarrhalis in 1970 and, subsequently, was reclassified as Moraxella catarrhalis. Controversy still exists as to its taxonomy. |
