Description The most useful observations regarding nutritional optic neuropathy have come not from sporadic cases encountered in practice, but rather from epidemics during war and famine. Two well-documented epidemics afflicted Allied prisoners of war of the Japanese during World War II and Cubans in the early 1990s. The characteristics of the disorder in those two populations are reasonably consistent and are described as follows.
