Description Compressive lesions within the orbit, the optic canal and, rarely, intracranially, may result in disc swelling. Most compressive optic neuropathies, whether they result from orbital or intracranial lesions, are not associated with optic disc swelling. However tumors, infections, and inflammations, and even adnexal structures that have become swollen or enlarged by disease, can all cause an optic neuropathy associated with optic disc swelling.
