The term ""tears"" refers to fluid that exists as a precorneal film and in the conjunctival sac. The volume of tear fluid is about 510 microliters. Tears are produced by the lacrimal gland, the accessory lacrimal glands, and the goblet cells of the conjunctiva. Normal secretion of tears is about 12 microliters/min. Except for those tears that evaporate, the tear fluid drains through the lacrimal puncta and canaliculi to the lacrimal sac, which then communicates with the nasal cavity. |
