Description HTLV-II can cause diseases similar to those caused by HTLV-I, but in contrast to HTLV-I, which shows tropism for CD4+ lymphocytes, HTLV-II preferentially infects CD8+ lymphocytes. HTLV-II is endemic in multiple geographic regions, including parts of North and South America inhabited by Native Americans and isolated areas of Mongolia and North Africa. Transmission of HTLV-II is similar to HTLV-I, occurring primarily in intravenous drug users, through sexual contact, and through vertical transmission from mother to newborn child.
