Description |
In 1796 Edward Jeraier 'initiated' the science of immunology with the discovery of the principle of vaccination against human smallpox. Research over the years has demonstrated that the immune response is a sophisticated defense process which has evolved to protect higher organisms from pathogens. Unfortunately the host's immunity may be activated inappropriately in the absence of external pathogens. The resulting damage of normal tissue can have severe consequences for patients. In the discussion below I will briefly outline the functions of the immune system and the pharmacological tools we have to suppress the inappropriate activation of this process. |
