Description Gaze problems in the pediatric population can be due to many causes. The etiologies include metabolic and structural defects. The next few pages summarize the findings in some of the more common entities associated with pediatric gaze disorders. The paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF) in the pons generates the output for horizontal saccades and the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF) in the midbrain performs the same service for vertical saccades. Thus brainstem disease can be suspected when saccadic gaze is abnormal.
