Description |
As a term, automated perimetry Is something of an etymological bastard. Perimetry Initially referred to examination of the peripheral limits of the visual field. The Instruments of Almark and Goldmann satisfied needs that 'campimeters' and 'tangent screens', meant to explore the central 30 degrees of the visual field, could not meet. Since Goldmann's perimeter provided standardization of luminance values and an elegant system for controlling background adaptation and test object presentation, It was widely adopted as the best device for visual field examination. I think that is why 'perimetry' now has the broader meaning of 'visual field examination'. At the same time we should recognize that, neuro-ophthalmologically, the most Important diagnostic information we get from the visual field lies in most instances within 30 degrees of fixation. |
