Description Light can cause retinal damage at the visible end of the spectrum by photochemical changes. This is especially true at the blue end of the spectrum and no change in temperature occurs. Photocoagulation of the retinal proteins can cause retinal damage when tissue temperature is raised ten degrees or more. Mechan!callnlury to the retila occurs when gases formed by raising the temperature actually disrupt tissues.
