Description Comprehensive anatomical studies of mammalian ganglion cells began in the late 19th century, followed by physiologic research in the 1940's, coinciding with the advent of microelectrodes. Although substantial literature exists on ganglion cell morphology and function, there appears to be significant differences between species. Since the majority of the research has been carried out in rabbit and cat, extrapolation to primates Is not straightforward.
