Title DIL Labeling of the Human Retinohypothalamic Tract
Creator Deborah I. Friedman, MD, MPH, Professor, Neurology & Neurotherapeutics, University of Texas Southwestern
Subject Suprachiasmatic Nuclei; Anterior Hypothalami; Circadian Rhythms; Environmental Light-Dark Cycle; Ipsilateral Optic Nerve Projection; Contralateral Optic Nerve Projection; Retinohypothalamic Projection; Dil Labeling
Description The suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), located In the anterior hypothalami, have been found to be important snes for synchronizing circadian rhythms to the environmental light-dark cycle. Studies in rats have shown that bilateral transection of the optic nerve produces desynchronization of the light-dark cycle and endogenous circadian rhythms. Transection distal to the chiasm does not alter circadian regulation, suggesting the presence of a retinofugal pathway near the optic chiasm.
