In this chapter we review some basics of mitochondrial genetics, and relate recent developments in mitochondrial genetics to three specific neuro-ophthalmic disorders. These disorders are the Kearns-Sayre syndrome, chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia and Leber hereditary optic neuropathy. The number of diseases caused by disorders of the mitochondria continue to grow. Extensive reviews of diseases produced by abnormalities of mitochondria have been published. In this chapter we will review three diseases which have specific neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations. We will briefly review the function of the mitochondria in order to better understand the disorders being reviewed. |
