Title Cortical Mechanisms for Control of Pursuit Eye Movement
Creator Robert H. Wurtz, PhD, National Eye Institute, National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD
Subject Pursuit System; Visual Motion Processing; Extrastriate Visual Cortex; MT Discharge; MST Discharge; MT Lesions
Description Advances in our understanding of the pursuit system that have been made in an animal model of the system, the old world or macaque monkey, have depended upon advances in our knowledge of visual motion processing in the visual cortex. It is first necessary therefore to identify the areas of cortex related to such motion processing before considering what has been learned about the control of pursuit. This syllabus will outline the response of cells in extrastriate cortex to visual motion, during pursuit eye movements, the effect of lesions on pursuit initiation, and the effect of other lesions on pursuit maintenance and is derived from a recent more extensive summary.
