The term "whip-lash" was coined by Cay and Abbott in 1953 in describing the mechanism of acute cervical trauma, typically following a rear-end automobile collision, which produced no direct head trauma or loss of consciousness. Patients are quickly discharged after initial examination, only to develop progressive symptomatology: variable head-neck pains, limitation of motion, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, irritability, insomnia, mounting anxiety and even depression. |
