Description PA is a rare but life-threatening condition characterized by headache, visual loss, ophthalmoplegia, and altered mental status caused by the sudden hemorrhage or infarction of the pituitary gland. Its pathophysiology remains unclear and over the past 20 years numerous case-reports have emphasized the association of PA with a wide variety of medications, procedures and pathologic states such as head trauma, recent surgery, endocrinologic testing or anticoagulation.
