Title Fat Distribution in Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC) Patients
Creator Kimberly Cockerham, MD, FACS
Subject pseudotumor cerebri; fat distribution; visceral fat
Description Risk factors for development of PTC include female gender, child bearing age and obesity. Weight loss is a first line of management in most cases. Gastric bypass surgery is effective especially in the morbidly obese. Intra-abdominal fat distribution (visceral fat) is linked to elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, hypertension, stroke, heart attack and type II diabetes. Studies have shown that aerobic exercise, rather than dieting, is more effective at reducing intra-abdominal fat. Objective: To examine fat distribution in patients with PTC.
