Subject Giant Cell Arteritis; Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy; Multifocal Electroretinography
Description The differentiation of non-arteritic AION from arteritic AION due to giant cell arteritis is usually based on one or more of the following: optic nerve appearance, preceding amaurosis, bilateral involvement, systemic symptoms, serum laboratory tests, and ultimately a positive temporal artery biopsy. During the first week of arteritic AION, fluorescein angiography often shows a decrease in regional choroidal perfusion due to occlusion of one or more posterior ciliary arteries, which can be diagnostic.
