Description Macular photopigments composed of carotenoids, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, act to protect the retina against light-induced oxidative damage by absorbing phototoxic blue light and reducing free radicals. These macular carotenoids can be measured non-invasively using a novel Raman spectroscopy instrument developed at the University of Utah. Although originally developed to investigate age-related macular degeneration, we have used this instrument to measure carotenoid levels in patients with light sensitivity.
