Description Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are a unique category of diseases related to abnormalities in the prionprotein. These diseases affect both animal and human hosts, produce neurologic symptoms, and appear to be uniformly fatal. These diseases have become the subject of increasing popular interest since the emergence of "mad cow disease" in 1986, and subsequent human consequences in the form of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in 1996.
