Description In dominant optic atrophy (DOA), the few available histopathologic reports appear to demonstrate selective loss of retinal ganglion cells with ascending optic atrophy, the loss being most pronounced in the macular area and retinal nerve fiber loss most evident in the papillomacular bundle. Because in vivo methods of mapping retinal ultrastructure have become available by optic coherence tomography (OCT), we aimed to investigate retinal ganglion and nerve fiber layer characteristics in 10 patients with dominant optic nerve atrophy (DOA) compared to a matched healthy subjects population.
