Title Incidence of Spontaneous Venous Pulsations: Revisited
Creator Prem Subramanian; Steven Donnelly
Affiliation (PS) Wilmer Eye Institute, Baltimore, Maryland; (SD) Winn Army Community Hospital, Fort Stewart, Georgia
Subject Papilledema; Optic Nerve; Venous Pulsations
Description Spontaneous venous pulsations (SVP) are rarely present in patients with papilledema, making SVP a useful finding in the evaluation of abnormal optic nerves. SVP also may be absent, however, in some normal subjects. Factors resulting in absent SVP in otherwise normal patients are not well characterized. Local ocular variables, especially involving intraocular pressure (IOP) and its variance (recently termed intraocular pulse pressure, IOPP) may have significant influence on SVP.
