Description Optic neuritis (ON) is an inflammatory condition of the optic nerve that occurs in two main settings: idiopathic and multiple sclerosis (MS). In nearly 20% of patients with MS, ON is the presenting manifestation of the disease. Recent clinical trials on the initiation of treatment with a disease modifying drug at the onset of an initial demyelinating event associated with a 'high risk' magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have shown a delay in the development of MS highlighting the importance of accurate diagnosis and evaluation of patients with ON.
