Title Practicing presence: accessing the attention-intention continuum in Dance performance and the creative process
Date 2019
Description This thesis describes the theories and procedures that I have developed for inspiring a performing body that is coordinated, yet impulsive. I have designed protocols that incite a shift in paradigm that affects the intuitive decision-making processes during the generation and performance of set material, which exist in the liminal space between paying attention and making intentional physical decisions. This writing describes the development of and discoveries made through the practice of choreographic procedures, which employ elements from improvisational movement research, Laban Barteneiff movement analysis, and creative systems theory. These devices combine to produce Wholexperience Protocols. The fundamental question I ask is how do I train myself and other performers to move with attention and intention in order to create a mature presence on stage, and how can these systems be applied to the compositional process.
