Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The one-story building at 4894-4900 S. State Street in Murray was built in 1949. The building was originally divided into two storefronts. the larger was the Sprouse-Reitz Company variety store (4984 S.). and the smaller was the Mode O'Day women 's clothing store (4900 S.). The architecturally style is commercial and the building represents a hybrid of the traditional early twentieth century storefront and the wide interior spans made possible by the use of the bowstring truss in the mid-twentieth century. The building sits on a concrete foundation and is constructed of concrete block. The fac;:ade is faced with striated red brick. A projecting brick pier divides the larger north storefront from the smaller south storefront. Both storefronts originally featured glass display windows with recessed doors. In the 1980s. the storefronts were filled with diagonally wood siding with a single recessed glass door in the northernmost bay. There have been minimal modifications to the secondary elevations. but because of the dramatic changes to the fac;:ade. the building was evaluated as non-contributing. The building takes up most of its 0.20-acre parcel and there are no associated outbuildings. The interior has been converted from the specialty stores to an Elks Lodge. The current owner is in the processed of creating a new retail space at the front of the building. The rear will be storage space. The footprint of the building measures approximately 68 by 137 feet with the narrow ends facing State Street and an alley to the rear. The foundation material is not visible on the fac;:ade . The brick facing extends to a parapet that hides with curved bowstring roof structure. The fac;:ade is divided into approximately four bays. The three north bays (49 feet) have a continuous storefront. although it is mostly filled with panels of diagonally siding (painted tan with green corner boards). The recessed glass door and sidelight at the north end date from the 1980s. There is a wood frieze (painted green) separating the storefront from a large space for signage framed by the red face brick. The sign space is painted tan with green graphics and lettering. There is a small square blade sign (Circa 1970s) mounted in the center of the signboard . The south storefront (19 feet) has no signage and no openings in the sided panels. The curved roof structure is visible on all of the secondary elevations. A base of concrete block on the secondary elevations has been painted green. while the upper portion is painted tan. The east end of the north elevation is obscured by the adjacent barber shop. an older one-story commercial building. Just west of the barbershop is a single full-glass door that is the north entrance to the building . This entrance has accessed to the adjacent parking lot on a separate legal parcel. A new green semi-circular awning has been installed over this entrance. The remainder of the north elevation is blank. There is a projection of concrete block which has small openings for an attached structure that no longer exists. The rear (west) elevation has three solid core doors (painted green). Two windows in the upper portion of the rear elevation appear to have been filled with block (date unknown). The south elevation is completely blank with no openings. The east half is obscured by a pre-existing one-story brick storefront. There is a concrete block chimney near the southeast corner of the building . On the interior. the building has approximately 9.100 square feet of space. Two original store spaces were likely open except for the rear. Between 1968 and 2013. when the building was used as an Elks Lodge. the interior spaces were combined and portioned for various uses. The front of the building was extended to the east when the recessed storefronts were blocked . The original exterior tile floor with the words "Mode O'Day" is still extant in the south storefront. as is the original wood and glass door. This area was used by the Elks for an office. but will be returned to a retail space by the current owner. The south storefront has a narrow storage room in the rear. The center and rear of the north storefront has a combination of spaces: ballroom. social hall with bar. kitchen. and restrooms. The current owner will use most of these spaces for storage. The building at 4894-4900 S. State Street is part of the continuous storefronts in Murray's historic downtown. but currently does not have sufficient historic integrity to be a contributing resource in Murray. 5 HISTORY 4894-4900 S. Explain and justify any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. In the first quarter of the twentieth century, Murray's downtown historic district was in transition from all locallyowned businesses to a combination of local and regional chain stores. By the early 1950s, only a handful of businesses were locally owned and most of the retail was either part of a regional or national chain of stores. The Sprouse-Reitz Company and the Mode O'Day building represents this transformation and is significant in the area of Commerce. Due to non-historic alterations to the fac;ade, the building is a non-contributing resource in the Murray Downtown Historic District (NRIS #0600928). The sixty-eight feet of State Street frontage in Murray's commercial district between 4894 South and 4900 South was originally occupied by four false-front frame commercial buildings. The various uses for storefronts included a harness shop, shoe repair, restaurant, clothing, confectioner, printer, hardware, and a saloon . By the 1940s, the properties had been acquired by the Madsen family whose hardware store was located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and State Street since 1903. After the death of Emil Madsen Sr. in 1947, the family split and relocated their retail enterprises and the hardware store was demolished in 1949. That year the properties between 4894 and 4900 were deeded to Alice Madsen who sold the parcel to Sidney M. and Veoma Horman. Sidney Melvin Horman was one of the most prolific commercial developers in Utah in the mid-twentieth century. He was born in Tooele, Utah, in 1905, and by the 1940s owned one of the largest construction companies in Utah . Horman developed the first covered shopping mall in the United States in Las Vegas. He developed twenty-five shopping centers and countless smaller retail buildings during his lifetime. The Madsen property was one of several he developed in Murray between the 1940s and 1960s. The Horman Construction Company built the bowstring truss building. According to an article in the Murray 1 Duane O. Wright Eagle, the architect for the "$40,000 modern one-story building" was Duane O. Wright. graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Utah. After serving in the US Corps of Engineers during World War II, Wright founded the Wright Engineering & Construction Company. On May 17, 1949, Sidney M. Horman signed the Sprouse-Reitz Company to lease the 49-foot wide north storefront. The Sprouse-Reitz Company operated a chain of variety stores, also known as five-and-dime stores, throughout the western United States. The company was founded in 1909 in Portland, Oregon, and at its peak had more than 300 stores in eleven states. On September 6, 1949, Horman signed a lease with the Mode O'Day Frock Shops for the smaller 19-foot south storefront. Mode O'Day was part of a national chain of women's clothing stores. It was part of the Gamble-Skogmo conglomerate based in Minnesota. Eleanor Townsend was the manager of the first Mode O'Day in Murray, which was located at 4822 S. State Street. Mrs. Townsend remained manager at the new location at 4900 S. State Street. The Mode O'Day in Murray was one of five locations in the Salt Lake Valley. The store remained open until 1965. Ironically, the store's closure was likely due to competition from the Cottonwood Mall in Holladay, Sidney M. Horman's second mall development project, and the first in Utah. 1 MUffay Eagle, July 8, 1949: 1. 5 HISTORY 4894-4900 S. State Street, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah page 4 -continuedThe Murray Eagle reported that the "Sprouse-Reitz Five, Ten and Fifteen cent department store" held its grand opening on Saturday, December 10, 1949. The manager R. M. Sorensen promised the store "would be loaded with bargains" and gifts would be wrapped upon request. The Sprouse-Reitz store eventually closed its doors in 1967. Horman had transferred the leases for the building to the Equitable Life Assurance Company, who reassigned the property to A. R. Curtis in 1964. In 1968, the property was transferred from A. R. Curtis & Sons to Warren E. and Marjorie Swartz, then from the Swartzes to Marvin R. and Carrol R. Curtis via a quitclaim deed. Marvin R. and Carrol R. Curtis deeded the property to the Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who held numerous investment properties in Utah. The Church leased the building to the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, Cottonwood Lodge #2344, eventually selling the property to the Elks Lodge in 1979. The Elks made a number of modifications to the interior and exterior, providing areas for a lounge, dining room , ballroom , and meeting hall. In January 2014, the Elks Lodge #2344 was dissolved and the building sold to the current owners, William G. and Susan S. Wright. The Wrights own a number of historic properties between State Street and Poplar Street in Murray. Susan Wright is in the process of preparing the front of the building as the new retail space for the Wright's Costume Shop, which will move from its current location in 2015. The rear of the former Sprouse-Reitz and Mode O'Day building will be used for costume storage, including costumes, props, and scenery for the Ballet-Dance Centre owned by the Wrights. 6 PHOTOS 4894-4900 S.
