Just north ofwhere the old City Hall once stood, two existing buildings recall the days when Murray's residents were just getting used to the idea ofliving in an incorporated town: l' CARLSON BLOCK-4889 South State Street-1903-Built for Emil Carlson. The Carlson family made their home on the second floor of a brick, two-part commercial block, while Mr. Carlson tried his hand at a variety of retail enterprises on the floor below. Musical instruments and automobiles were tried in turn but the Carlson name is most firmly associated with bicycles. " E LARSON BLOCK-4883 South State Street-1903-Built for John W. Larson. Mr. Larson operated a harness shop further south on State Street but soon moved his business to a brick, two-part commercial block. The ground floor housed his new business block and his family lived on the second floor. Note the building has been enlarged by the addition of wings to the north and south sides. circa 1917 •z~ f' WARENSKI BUILDING-4871-4879 South State Street-1915-Built for Edward J. Warenski. The land north and east of the Larson Block was the domain of the Warenski family. Merchant, saloon keeper, postmaster, and real estate developer, Edward C. Warenski did much to extend Murray's business district north to 4800 South. Here he built what may have been Murray's first brick store building on State Street and four brick homes. His son, Edward J. Warenski, continued the work, building the Gem Theatre and the Warenski Building. The original store and the theater are gone now but the Warenski Building remains at the core of a commercial complex which developed over a period of nearly forty years. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Warenski Building is a brick, two-story two-part commercial block. It hosted several of Murray's most prominent businesses, including Thomas Martin & Co., a general merchandise store, and The Leader, a men's and women's clothing store. The Leader, which is usually remembered for its connection with Arthur Frank, was originally established by D. B. Baron in the first Boden Block. Following the 1904 fire, Mr. Baron relocated to the Fraternal Hall. Mr. Frank assumed management of the Leader chain (branches were i ... 1 ~ :: • :. Mr. and Mrs. Heckel lived above the store which featured an overhead, suspended sign in the form of a horse. This was later replaced with the sole of a large shoe, with the Florsheim trademark. Shoes were sold in the front and a shoe repair shop was located in back having a south window exposure onto Emil Carlson's back yard. Steel rings were attached to a cement curb which served as hitching ties alongside of a watering trough for local horsemen. Hendricks Shoe later occupied this location which currently houses Don Blair Photo. A drinking fountain was located in front of Blair's Studio at the location of the fonner watering trough. excerpt from Murray History Inventory published by Murray City, 1994 A TOWN AT WORK 295 Angelus Camper Village (New Motor Homes) Broadway Motors (Used) Clines Auto Sales (New & Used) H. Warenski's saloon was the first building along there. It was where the Vista Theatre is now. Later the Iris Apartments were built. There was an auto dealers store where the Iris building is and apartments above it. "E. Carlson means Emil Carlson. He was my father. My parents had twelve children and I was number six . There were six girls and six boys, and we're scattered now. "I have a sister, Lila Sanders, who lives in Murray. My brother Jim just moved back to the area from Idaho Falls," George told me when I visited him at the old Carlson Bike shop last summer. George's father founded the company about 1898 in the exact spot where George operates the present store, 4889 South State. His father, an immigrant from Sweden, came over for religious reasons. 296 THE HISTORY OF MURRAY CITY. UTAH They both explained that their father. Emil or "E . Carlson " had died in 1960. George had been at the shop seven years before to help his father as he was an invalid since 1953. " Heckel 's Shoe Store was built about the same time as Carlson's. At first it belonged to a Mr. Johnson and later Robert Heckel took it over. "The City Hall and the Fire station were both built after, for Carlson 's was bu ilt in 1906:' George explained. AIr. and AIrs. Emil Car/son. The following was taken from the microfilm found at the University of Utah Library of the newspaper article taken from the American Eagle. and dated in 1906. THE CARLSON BLOCK: Emil Carlson . the enterprising young bicycle man . who owned a bicycle and novelty shop south 01 Orson Sanders store. a year ago. has just recently completed his new twostory brick building . located opposite the Eagle 01lice. in wh ich he has located his shop. He is an energetic young man and had the good lortune to marry a charming young lady just as he was ready to move into his new building . Mr. Carlson has a large stock 01 bicycles. musical instruments. etc . and runs a general repa ir shOp. Clocks and watches repa ired. key-l ilting and sewing machines repa ired . "First he started a music business here. even before you had one. but quite different from yours. It was mostly just instruments. Later on Dad added the bikes." George Carlson explained . "In the first part of the twenties my dad sold autos here. There was the Flint. Durrant and the Star." "My mother was Martha Karkstrom Carlson . She came from Sweden. too. They did not know each other there but met and married here. "They had a hard go of it with a large family and they lived in Murray all their life. Home was above the business and the back part. Dad had the building built for him. he helped and others did. too. We still have the apartments upstairs we used. Don't rent them now. had bad luck with renters! "Want to see where I live? Right back of the store. It was built at the same time as the rest of the building. wasn't it, Jim?" He pointed to his brother. The three of us went to see his place in the rear. It was a typical bachlor's quarters. clean and interesting. They showed the wedding picture taken of their parents and loaned it to us so we could take off a copy. "All the buildings on the west side of State Street were frame wood shacks. although they were new then , in 1918. Peoples houses were on the next street over, that is back of State and on Poplar street, on the west side of the street. "There was a photographer over there. on the west side of the street. A shoe maker. a fruit stand and there's always been a barber on your side of the street. in the same place Milt had his, newer building though. A drug store has always been in that same spot, but run by different people. "Happy Hour Theatre was next to Bill Dunn'S place, then came the mortuary. Down the street north was the Murray Merc and it was one of the first buildings in Murray. must have been in 1898 or 1900. "Let's see, oh yes, there was Shakespeare's Hamburger Stand further north. a busy place run by a husband and wife team . These were all on the west side of the Street. "On my side, the east, were photo shops run by different people: a tailor shop, cleaners, Tyler's Ice Cream and dime store for awhile. A Bank's Mortuary was located where Bigler's is now, that's about 4915 So. State. That building was erected about the same time as your music store. a long time ago, probably in 1900. The east side of State Street was built up for business first, faster than on the west side. "Emil Madsen Sr. had his store north of the barber shop, right on the corner where the vacant lot is now. Lots of grocery stores went in there after that. It was built a long time ago but torn down, as you know. "Madsen's was one of the first buildings built on the west side of the street. There was the father, Emil Sr. & Emil Jr. He later had a store. not well built. just north of your place. Another son was Kenneth - (but we called him Jake) and Ernest. oh and a girl Eugenia. in the Madsen family . "Did you know that your music store building is one of the old buildings in Murray? The First National bank had your place a long time. later Lyon Drug . There were always a lot of A TOWN AT WORK businesses upstairs where you now have your three apartments." George Carlson was a mechanic for twentyfive years and enjoyed it. One reason he came back to the business, other than to assist his father, was to work repairing the bikes, he told me. "See that tool box over there? Interesting story about it. This is the original box used at the Eagle newspaper many years ago on west 4800 South . It was used as a dye case in theIr business. My father bought it many years ago when the old Eagle on west 4800 burned down. Awful fire," George Carlson said, shaking his head sadly. "I told you my dad had a furniture store, didn't I? Well, I liked this dye case and thought it would be a handy tool case for all of my wrenches and things I work with in repairing . "This box is now the oldest thing at the E. Carlson shop and it dates back about 1919. Yes, I'll think about letting you have it for the Murray Museum," he told me. "Come here, see this old bike? Doesn't look like much, but it's kind of an antique. Anyway it's Old, over sixty years. Needs to be fixed up and I plan to do it when I get a little more time," he told me. It had been a wonderful morning spent with the two Carlson's who are sons of the founder of the E. Carlson Co. founded in 1898. Always located in the same spot their business is a landmark! Briefly describe the principal building. additions or alterations and their dates. and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Emil Carlson Building, built in 1903, is a two-part commercial block located at 4889 S. State Street in Murray. The building is constructed of brick on a concrete (possibly stone) foundation. The original building was a narrow commercial block facing State Street with a one-story addition at the rear. In 1965, the fa~de was remodeled and given a deeply recessed storefront with horizontal storefront windows, an aluminum door, and a metal slipcover was installed on the upper level and brick facing installed on the lower level. In the 1990s, the slipcover was removed and the upper fa~de was covered in narrow aluminum siding. The current appearance of the storefront is very different from the Original Victorian Eclectic-style brick fa~de and therefore the building is currently ineligible for the National Register. However, it is possible that original material may exist under the siding and the building may be restored at a future date. A historic photograph taken at the time of the Original construction indicates the building was a typical Victorian Eclectic commercial storefront. The central door was flanked by large display windows with a transom above. The bulkhead was wood. There was a cornice (probably wood) above the transoms. On the upper level, there were two windows with segmental-arched hoods of rowlock brick. The windows were two-over-one, double-hung, wood windows. The building had a stringcourse of projecting brick above the windows and a corbelled cornice at the parapet. Around 1931, the gap between 4889 S. and 4883 S. was filled. The addition enclosed an exterior stair to the upper levels of both buildings and an exterior door was added. By 1960, the cornice had been removed, the entrance had been shifted to the south and the windows replaced. In 1965, a slipcover of alternating colors was installed on the upper level and a rock-faced roman brick facing applied to the lower level. The slipcover also covered the extension of the building to the north. In the 19908, the metal slipcover was removed and narrow siding of a yellow color was installed on all the elevations of the upper level. The storefront windows and doors also appear to have been replaced. The rear addition is one-story and appears on the 1911 so was probably built close to the original construction. The addition is also covered in siding (circa 1991). There is a rear entrance on the east elevation. The interior of the building has been remodeled numerous times, most recently in the 1990s. The building takes up most of its 0.1 O-acre parcel; however there is a small landscaped backyard at the rear. There is a large parking lot, which is shared by several businesses to the east. The Emil Carlson Building is one of two remaining turn-of-the-century commercial buildings on the east side of State Street between Vine Street and 4800 South. Although the historic integrity of the building has been compromised, the history of the building makes it a contributing historic resource in Murray City's historic downtown. 2 5 HISTORY Architect/Builder: Unknown Date ofConstruction: 1903 Historic Themes: Marie themes related to this property with "S" or "c" (S = significant, C = contributing). Perhaps no other building in Murray's historic downtown has been associated with one single individual for such a long period of time. The building at 4889 S. State Street was associated with Emil Carlson for nearly six decades. After Carlson's death, his sons continued the family business for two more decades. The property purchased by Emil Carlson from Orson Sanders (1863-1930) and Rose Sheppard Sanders (1866-1952) in July of 1903. The Carlson bt,lilding, also historically known as the Carlson Block, was constructed later that year. Aan American Eagle article from December 1903 refers to the tWo-story brick building as "recently completed.· Emil Carlson was born Carl Gustaf Emil Carlson in Vesteros, Sweden, on October 10, 1878. He came to Utah in 1899. On the 1900 census, he is listed as a single man living with the Ellison family of Murray. His occupation was day laborer. Emil Carlson started a bicycle repair business in 1902 and built the two-story block in 1903. On November 18, 1903, Emil married Martha Carlstrom, reportedly in the front display area of the Carlson bUilding. 1 Martha Victoria Carlstrom (also Klarkstrom) was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 26, 1884. She came to Utah at the age of 16, in 1900. The American Eagle article described Emil Carlson's remarkable year as follows: Emil Carlson, the enterprising young bicycle man ... has just recently completed his new two story brick building ... in which he has located his shop. He is an energetic young man and had the good fortune to marry a charming young lady just as he was ready to move into his new building. Mr. Carlson has a large stock of bicycles, musical instruments, etc. and runs a general repair shop. Clocks and watches repaired, key fitting and sewing machines repaired. 2 Emil and Martha Carlson had twelve children, six boys and six girls, all of whom grew to maturity. The entire family lived above the shop. The children were responsible for calling "Hey, Pa, Somebody" to alert Emil that a customer had entered the front of the shop. Though primarily associated with bicycles, Emil Carlson tried his hand at a variety of enterprises. In the 1910s and 1920s, Carlson sold and repaired Flint, Durrant, and Star automobiles. A gasoline dispensing pump was located next to the curb, a few feet from the watering trough in front of the harness shop. On the census enumerations, Carlson listed his occupations as repairing bicycles (1910); machinist, bicycles and autos (1920); and machinist, autos (1930). On the 1930 census, Carlson's two oldest sons were working as truck drivers. I MUIT8Y Historic Showcase, published by Murray City, 1994. Other sources state the marriage took place in the Salt Lake Temple. 2 American Eagle, December 26, 1903. 3 5 HISTORY -continuedBy the 1930s, Emil Carlson had added furniture to his inventory. A 1936 article in the Murray Eagle detailed Emil Carlson's hobby of hand-making orchestra-quality violins when not busy at the store. In 1953, Emil Carlson became an invalid and was helped in the store by his sons, Edward Carlson (19041992), George Emil Carlson (1912-1987), and later James Carlson (1916-1981). Martha V. Carlson died on August 9, 1955. Emil Carlson died on February 20, 1960. They are buried in the Murray City Cemetery. The Carlson family continued the bicycle business until the early 1980s. The building was eventually sold to Jacob and Mark Montag. It has been used for a variety of businesses since that time. In1995, the property was sold to the current owners, Valery and Lyubov Starikov. 6 PHOTOGRAPHS Common LabellnfonnatJon: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5 Emil Carlson Building 4889 S. A very old violin of unusual make is included in the Carlson collection and may possibly be a real big league fiddle. A genuine violin of old Italian manufacture is sometimes of great price. Japanese workmanship is shown by one of the violins and it is labeled \vith an Italian name. The Japanese strive to please and if the public prefers Italian violins they will not disapoint them. Mr. Emil Carlson, the only Murray violin maker, at least that we know about, ,viII be ready for the Christmas fiddle trade. The wood in some of these violins is from Utah trees and seems to have the melody of the mountain winds caught in its fibres. Maybe some day Emil will bring a Fritz Kriesler here, looking for a violin with exquisite Murray tones.
