Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Williams-Hendrickson House, built circa 1903, is a Victorian Eclectic-style cross wing brick house located at 4837 S. Poplar Street in Murray. The house is built on a stone foundation later encased in concrete (circa 1930s). The brick is laid in a running bond with flush mortar jOints. The roof is asphalt shingle. The house is simple with cornice returns on the projecting wing as the only decorative element. The frieze is wide and plain. The windows feature rowlock brick segmental-arch hood and brick sills. The windows are in the original wood frames. Most are one-over-one, double-hung windows. There is a fixed frame window with transom in the projecting wing. A metal awning shades the window. The front door is newer, but the transom is intact. A small frame addition with a simple gable roof (circa 1920s) is at the rear on the northeast corner. The back door (replacement) faces north. The addition has small square windows. The addition has narrow clapboards and exposed rafter joints, but no other decoration. There is a second dwelling located directly behind (east) of the primary dwelling. This residence uses the address 4837 B, while the main house is 4837 or 4837 A Poplar Street. The secondary dwelling is a frame bungalow, built circa 1925, and moved to the site and placed on a concrete foundation in 1972. There is no information on where it was located previously, but likely move from within the neighbor~ood during the commercialization of the area. The house faces north and has a square footprint. IThe main feature is a hipped roof and a half-width recessed porch. The balustrade has square posts, but there is also a lathe-turned support post, which does not match the character of the house and appears to be a later addition. The windows and doors appear to be the originals. The two houses take up most of the 0.1 O-acre parcel. There is a landscaped lawn area in the front yard (on Poplar) and a very small backyard east of the second house. The driveway is gravel and on the north side of the property. There are several mature trees on the west and south property lines. There is a chain link fence on the south and east property lines. North and south of the houses are asphalt l driveway~ to the nearby commercial buildings to the east on State Street. The Williams-Hendrickson House hjS its historic integrity and contributes to the historic resources of Murray's downtown. The !i bUng~lo" 1 is considered nontontrib~~ir~ ~pause it was movf to the present site. 2 Architect!Builder: Date of Construction: circa 1903 & 1925 Unknown Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with (see instructions for details) _Agriculture _Economics rLArchitecture _Education _Archeology _Engineering _Art _Entertainment! _Commerce Recreation .:. :. :. The Williams-Hendrickson House was originally patented to George Howard (1823-1880) and deeded to Sarah Hughes (?-1889) in July 1874. Sarah Hughes held the property for just a month before transferring the title to her son-in-law, John Williams. John Griffith Williams was born in Ebervalle, Wales, on March 27, 1843, and immigrated in 1864. He married Sarah Ann Hughes on April 28, 1866 in Salt Lake City. Sarah Ann Hughes was born in Swansea, South Wales, on September 13,1844. The Hughes family immigrated to Utah in 1865. John and Sarah Williams lived in Murray after their marriage. They had 'seven children. John G. Williams was a pioneer blacksmith in Murray. It is difficult to determine when the house was built. The tax cards give an estimated date of 1903; however the style and materials suggest a date possibly ten to fifteen years older. The 1900 census does not provide addresses so it is difficult to say if John and Sarah Williams were living in the house at the time. It may have been built for one of their children. An article in the American Eagle indicates that John Williams owned a building in the area in 1904 when the opening of Poplar Street (originally an alley) was being discussed. By the 1910 census, Sarah and John Williams were living at 4957 S. State, where they lived until their deaths. John G. Williams died on January 22, 1922. Sarah Ann Hughes Williams died on March 23, 1928. Prior to her death, Sarah Ann Williams sold the Poplar Street property to Mike Ruby in March 1924. During the early 1900s, Murray experienced an influx of immigrants due to the success of the nearby smelter. There was always a need for rental housing, particularly on the west side of Murray. The 1910 census shows the Poplar Street neighborhood as a mix of immigrants in rental housing and longtime residents in owner-occupied dwellings. The census does not give addresses, but renters Nick Mergec (sp?) and Pete Stovich may have been neighbors to Arthur and Lovenia Townsend, who lived at 4843 Poplar Street. Both men worked at the smelter and came from central Europe. By the time of the 1920 census, the Poplar Street house was the home of Martin and Mary Hendrickson and their six children. Martin Alfred Hendrickson was born August 7, 1877, in Oslo, Norway. He came to Utah in 1896. Mary Beta Hendrickson was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 27,1878. She immigrated in 1892. The couple was married in Salt Lake City on March 12, 1901. Martin Hendrickson worked for the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) for forty years. He worked at unloading cars at the smelter in 1920. The Hendricksons later moved to another house on Poplar Street and then to 5300 South in Murray. Martin Hendrickson died on June 20, 1937. Mary Hendrickson died on May 28, 1966. 3 5 HISTORY -continued- Although he became the owner in 1924, Mike Ruby never lived in the house. No information could be located on him. In 1928, he sold the property to Matt & Mary Berkovich. The Berkovich family lived in the neighborhood, but did not live in the house at 4837 S. Poplar. At the time of the 1930 census, the house was rented to Ernest and Tressa Davies. Ernest James Davies was born in Murray on October 26, 1901. He was a foreman for the Midvale Steel Company and was the superintendent of Murray City Water Department for 32 years. He married Tressa Seal on August 9, 1925. Tressa Bernice Seal was born on January 25, 1908 in Riverton, Utah. They lived in the Poplar Street house also a few years, but stayed in Murray to raise four children. Tressa B. Davies died on October 9, 1980. Ernest J. Davies died on November 2,1988. The property had several different renters between 1934 and 1948, most working in the Murray downtown area: for example, Grant M. Evans (1902-1967), who had a dentist office in the Harker Building; and Norris C. Gilbert (1910-1986), who was a clerk at Hoffman's meat market. In August 1948, Matt and Mary Berkovich sold the house to Evelyn M. Hawkins. Evelyn married Leo Pierce Beagley (1914-1998). The Beagleys lived in the house until the 1970s, and sold it in 1997. It continued as a rental residence until 2004 when it was sold to the current owner, Aaron Campbell. 6 PHOTOGRAPHS Common Label Information: 1. 2. . 3. 4. 5 Williams-Hendrickson House 4837 S.
