Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Freeze/Tripp House was built c. 1895 in the popular Victorian Eclectic style in a crosswing fonn. It is oneand-a-half stories tall with hip-roofed domlers on the south and east elevations. The characteristic Victorian Eclectic variety of textures is seen in the range of materials and surfaces used in the house. The walls are smooth brick set in a stretcher bond with flush mortar joints. There is a dentil stringcourse of rock-faced brick at the top of the window openings on the first floor and another three courses of rock-faced brick above the fOtmdation . The foundation is coursed rock-faced sandstone ashlar and there is decorative scrollwork over the windows on the fa9ade. The gable ends on the south and east elevations as well as the vertical surfaces on the dormers are clad in shingle siding. All of the fa9ade windows have transoms, several with patterned leaded glass. Both gable ends have Palladian windows with the central arched window flanked by single-paned smaller lights. With the exception of the two large fixed-pane windows on the fa9ade, the windows are wooden -sashed and double-hung with what appears to be original sashes. An external closed stairway was added to the second floor on the west side during a conversion of the singlefamily house to apartments in 1951.1 At the same time a low-pitched front-gabled two-car garage was added to the rear of the house with a driveway on to Wasatch Street. There is a shed-roofed enclosed porch at the rear from an unknown date? Maintenance has been deferred on the entire house and peeling paint is currently exposing wooden sash . The house is on a fully landscaped comer lot, facing heavily trafficked Vine Street to the south and residential Wasatch Street to the east. The house retains its historic integrity and is a contributing building in a historic district. 5 mSTORY Date of Construction: c. 1895 3 A rchitect/Builder: mlknown Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with (see instructions for details) _ Agriculture _ Economics Architecture Education _Archeology _Engineering _Art _ Entertainment/ _Commerce Recreation _Communications _Ethnic Heritage _Community Planning .....£Exploration/ & Development Settlement _Conservation _Health/Medicine "S" or "c" (S = sign!/icant, C _Industry _Invention _Landscape Architecture _Law Literature _Maritime History _Military _Performing Arts = contributing). _Politics/ Government _Religion --.!'5cience _Social History _Transportation _Other Write a chronological history of the property. focusing primarily on the original or principal owners & Significant events. I 2 5 mSTORY 205 East Vine Street, Sandy, UT 1).3 James Freeze purchased 184 acres for $7500 in 1881 from the Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution of the 13 th Ward. He owned the land from 1881 to 1902 and most likely built the house c. 1895 . James Perry Freeze was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to James and Frances Goss Freeze in 1835 and came to the Salt Lake valley in 1861. He married Mary Ann Burnham in Richmond, Cache County, in 1863 and moved to Salt Lake City. He 4 joined the Mormon Church in 1870 soon married three more polygamous wives, Sarah Jane Granter, Sophia Wickens and Lelian Tuckett 5 This house may have been built for his second wife, Sarah Jane Granter, for her name is on the title records as his wife when the property was sold to John A. Tripp in 1902. She was born in Salt Lake City in 1853 to William George Granter and Sarah Jane Hodder. Her son, Sherman G . Freeze, sold the City of Murray some of the land that later became the Murray City Park. John Tripp is a son of Enoch Bartlett Tripp who settled in South Cottonwood at about 900 West 5900 South in 1868 . Jolm Andrew Tripp was born in 1861 to Jessie AIm Eddings . Enoch Tripp had six polygamous wives, thirty-two sons and daughters and many descendants in the Salt Lake Valley today. Jolm A. Tripp purchased a larger piece (84 square rods) of property that included this house in 1902. He transferred this parcel and other property to his wife, Emeline Shoell Tripp, in 1918. She, in tum, deeded it to their children, Mark E. , Gleim E . and Julie 1. McFarland in 1924 and they used it as an income property. For example, Mrs . Hazel Hill, widow of William Hill, was renting the house in 1930.6 The other siblings gave the title to Glenn E . Tripp in 1933 . He held the title for four years before selling to Kenneth E. and Lavern H . Coombs in 1937. Kenneth and Lucy LaVern Coombs are both Utah County natives. Kenneth was born in 1899 in Payson, Utah County, to Ephraim and Emma Jeannette Potter Coombs . And Lucy LaVern Hales was born in 1900 in Lehi, Utah County, to Stephen Alexander Hales and Mary Ellen Fox . They married in Salt Lake City in 1924 and had ten children together. 7 The Coombs also used it as an income property and rented to the Leethams 8 Stephen and Mary Ann Leetham moved into the house in 1938 and lived there with their family. Stephen Holt Leetham was born in 1886 in Minot, North Dakota, to Stephen and Mary Ann Forner Leetham . He and Mary Horman married in 1914 in Tooele. Their daughter, Ann, was married to her husband, Roy Whittle, in the house in 1939.9 Stephen Leetham was a carpenter and built the new front porch with a cement floor and an outside entrance to the main bedroom on the east side. The Leethams later separated. Title to the lot and house was in Mary Ann Leetham's name in 1949. She sold to Frank C. Howe in 1950. Frank Cotton Howe was born in South Cottonwood in 1873 to Richard Howe and Ann Turner. Frank Howe was involved in real estate as well as operating a dairy farm on Vine Street with his brother, Harry. Frank Howe added the covered outside stairway on the west side of the house lO and converted the interior space into two apartments . The Howe family sold in 1976 to C. Thomas Barnard, the current owner. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or LOS. According to the Murray history book, one of these little wood frame homes was likely built by Walter Henry Atwood from timber from the canyons for his wife Deidarnia and his second wife, Julia Dibble. Since the building date from the Salt Lake County Assessors list the building date as 1890's, these homes have been altered or are located on the same property of that first frame horne.
