Boggess (1798-1864) was a plantation owner in Clarksburg, West Virginia. As the American Civil War marched closer to his doorstep, two of his nine children, William Augustus and Eliza Ann Turpin, moved west with the Mormon migration. A widow, Eliza Ann also brought her children west. William and Eliza each married and settled in Union. Eliza married Peter Van Valkenburg and added six more children to her family. William married Bergitte (Elizabeth) Orstad. One of William's nine children was Elmo Engel Boggess (1885-1957). Elmo knew early in life that he wanted to be an educator. He received a teaching degree from the University of Utah and by 1904 was teaching in Coalville. He farmed with the family in Union during the summer, and in 1906 would drive a horse buggy to teach at the West Jordan Elementary School. In 1908, Elmo became Principal of Liberty Elementary School in Murray City. He married the art teacher from Liberty, Mary Ann Jeanette Larson in 1911. That same year Elmo became Principal of Arlington Elementary School, a position he held for sixteen years. Elmo and Mary Ann made their home at 271 East 4800 South Streets. In 1927 they and their four children returned to the Boggess family farm in Union. After twenty-one years of teaching at Irving Junior High in Sugarhouse, Elmo Boggess retired from a long and successful career. Eldin Boggess became the first chiefof-staff at Cottonwood Hospital.
