Description Typed transcripts by George S. Tanner of several letters from Lot Smith written from 1862 to 1884. The letter of 16 June 16 1862 to Brigham Young discusses Utah's position as a loyal Union territory during the Civil War. Letter of 13 July 1862 to Brigham Young discusses some interaction with the Shoshone Indians and their chief Washakie. Six letters from 1876 and 1877 at Sunset, Arizona, are addressed to Brigham Young. A series of letters from 1877 to 1884 are addressed to John Taylor, and responses come from John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, Brigham Young, Jr., and others.
