Student’s Age: 13 Date: 5/5/2020 SCHOOL How did you feel when you learned that schools would close because of the COVID-19 pandemic? I felt very distraught at first, like something had been taken from me. I rely a lot on school to keep my daily tasks in place, so taking that part of my day away felt very odd at first, but then I started adapting to it. Eventually everything fixed itself. What do you like the most about online school? I like that I know how to work things, and if I get stuck, my parents are there to help me through my problem. What do you dislike the most about online school? I dislike that I cannot interact with people anymore. I am very social, so this was something else that left quite a big change to get used to. What do you miss the most about school? I miss my friends and the teachers. They all kept me good company and kept me on track. Now that the option of social gatherings, like school, have been taken away, it gets very odd at times. How are you connecting with your school friends during the pandemic? I have been attempting to contact my school friends, but I never get responses. So, I will just say I have not been keeping in touch with them much. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES What activities did you do before the pandemic? (Sports, music, etc. Please be specific.) I was not doing many activities outside of school, as I have just moved to the area, but I would do running and other active things with my friends. Are you continuing to do them now? If so, how? Do you use a virtual platform? Do you do them as you did before? I am not currently doing them, but I should be. I try my best to get time away from my schooling. What do you miss most about doing these activities in person? I miss being able to see my friends and have fun with them as we did these things. What do you like most about doing activities online? I like being able to strengthen my online knowledge and occasionally get to see some of my friends and acquaintances. FAMILY AND HOME What questions do you have about the pandemic? When will the pandemic mellow out enough to stop the quarantine? Are the news stories true? What has changed the most in your home because of the pandemic? We all are on edge because of the pandemic. We’re all really short fused and that tends to lead to disagreements, but we’ve worked it out so far. How do you spend your free time at home? I do not have much free time, as a cause of the pandemic, but when I do have some extra time, I often spend it drawing, reading, or watching YouTube. How have you stayed connected to extended family? How has this changed your relationships? I have stayed connected through phone calls and video chats. My relationships really have not changed much, other than the relationship with my father; I haven’t had much time to really call and he’s usually super busy with work, so we haven’t spoken much Are you learning new skills because of the pandemic? (Cooking, babysitting, house chores, arts, crafts, etc.?) If so, what are they? Yes, I am learning some skills. I am learning piano, babysitting, cooking, and a bit of chores. I’m also strengthening my drawing skills, which is what I’m the proudest of. SOCIETY How has the pandemic affected your community? How has it affected our state? It has affected our community quite a bit. Though, in some cases, it makes us stronger as a community and a state. Everyone is both kind and rude about some things, and it slightly annoys me, but I know that everyone means well and wants to get through this as much as I do, but it still unites us as a community and state to get through it together. Do you see any positive impacts from the pandemic? Explain… There are many different positive effects, some being the pollution decrease. In places like Salt Lake, you can see through the pollution, which, being someone who has stayed in Salt Lake many times, is a rare occurrence. People have also banded together doing multiple different things to help the community from the confines of their own home, refer to the many people making masks for others. Do you see any negative impacts from the pandemic? Explain… People are honestly making a bigger deal out of it than it really is. One thing is the masks; when my family and I go out, without our masks, we always get really mean stares and rude people saying things about us not wearing them. It really hurts to hear and see these things, and as a result, I just do not want to go out anymore. What do you want future generations to know about what it’s like to experience a pandemic? I want them to know that it is hard, but it is for the best. It gets really frustrating at times, to the point I just want to give up, but I keep going. I know that it is all for the best and it’ll get better soon. |
