Student’s Age: 14 Date: May 8th, 2020 SCHOOL Navigator Pointe Academy How did you feel when you learned that schools would close because of the COVID-19 pandemic? When schools were closing due to the COVID-19 virus, I didn't think it would eventually end up being for the rest of the year. Once I found out that no school was open for the remainder of the school year, I was devastated. I have been attending the same school for my whole life, and this was the year I was going to say my last goodbyes because I am going to high school. I feel I didn't hug my friends as tight as I wanted to, I didn't compliment someone when I had the chance, I didn't feel the need to reflect on what I had before all of this started. I took advantage of what I had for granted. I didn't learn that I am so lucky to have amazing friends, great teachers, and just as simple of being able to touch someone until it was all gone. What do you like the most about online school? I like seeing that I'm able to adapt to learning from a computer when it is so different from actual school learning in a classroom setting. What do you dislike the most about online school? I dislike the amount of work I received from online school. I feel that there is enough stress going around the whole world right now that I don't need a ton of work to stress about and get done by strict due dates. What do you miss the most about school? I miss being social at school. For me personally, I am a social butterfly and like to talk to anyone and everyone. COVID-19 took that away from me. I can't socialize; therefore, my mood is getting more sad than usual. How are you connecting with your school friends during the pandemic? I am connecting with my school friends during this pandemic by using facetime, big Google Hangout group chats, Snapchat, and Instagram. Texting and calling is a way (not the best way) to connect with my good friends during this crazy time. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES What activities did you do before the pandemic? (Sports, music, etc. Please be specific.) Before the pandemic started, I went to my dance studio right after school and danced for around 5 hours a day for the whole 9 years I've been at NPA (my school). Are you continuing to do them now? If so, how? Do you use a virtual platform? Do you do them as you did before? I am continuing to dance, but on a virtual platform called Zoom. Each of my classes have codes and passwords to join a face to face meeting. As of May 1st however, Utah has slowly been opening things back up, including my dance studio. So half of every class will be able to go into the studio and dance, but they have marks on the ground of about 6 feet apart where the students stand, and we have to wear masks the whole time. What do you miss most about doing these activities in person? I miss being able to connect with my fellow dancers and really move together as a team. Virtually it will never be the same or have the same feeling that it does in person. What do you like most about doing activities online? I like being able to experience what it's like to dance in my own home, and seeing how I can use my space that I have to my advantage. FAMILY AND HOME What questions do you have about the pandemic? A question I have about this pandemic is when it will finally come to an end and I will be able to socialize with the world again. Another question I have is will the virus ever come back and we have to experience quarantine all over again. What has changed the most in your home because of the pandemic? Nothing much has really changed in my home because I only have my mom and I in the house. The biggest thing that has changed is that I can't invite any friends over. How do you spend your free time at home? I spend my free time at home by sleeping because being so stressed has messed up my sleep schedule. How have you stayed connected to extended family? How has this changed your relationships? I haven't been able to stay connected to extended family. This has changed my relationships because my family has had several birthdays that we couldn't celebrate. I feel like I've lost some love with my extended family because I haven't been able to see them in so long. Are you learning new skills because of the pandemic? (Cooking, babysitting, house chores, arts, crafts, etc.?) If so, what are they? I have been learning how to cook more complex meals, more complex workouts and diets to try, and I've been getting more into art recently. SOCIETY How has the pandemic affected your community? How has it affected our state? The pandemic has affected my community by having a lot more people going outside and being active because they're bored in their own houses. The pandemic has affected our state by having everything closed and not being able to go hardly anywhere. I think people are going on a lot more road trips in our state to have something a little more interesting happen during quarantine. Do you see any positive impacts from the pandemic? Explain… A positive impact I've seen from the pandemic is that the Earth is the healthiest it's been in years. Rivers and lakes are clear, a lot less pollution in the air, and so much more. Do you see any negative impacts from the pandemic? Explain… A negative impact from the pandemic is the amount of deaths there has been in only three months. Hospitals are full of COVID-19 patients, and it's hard to supply those hospitals. What do you want future generations to know about what it’s like to experience a pandemic? I want future generations to never take anything in their life for granted because there could be an unexpected pandemic where they might have to stay isolated from everyone. Treat everyone in your life the kindest you can be because you never know what can happen in the small world. You don't want to regret saying or doing a mean/bad thing to someone you love.
